Quilt auction to raise funds for mission projects at WUMC

The silent auction of this quilt will raise funds for Wesley UMC mission programs.   The Wesley United Methodist Church is auctioning off a homemade quilt to raise money for missions.  Beulah Fisher, a long time Vinton resident and avid seamstress, made the quilt top.  After her death, her family gave Wesley the quilt top, which Kathleen Pettengill, of Forget Me Knot Quilting, quilted as her gift to missions.

US BANK DONATES TO GARRISON EMERGENCY SERVICES

Jon Kremer presents a $2,500 check to Garrison Fire Chief Steve Meyer to assist with storm recovery   The US Bancorp Foundation recently made a $2,500 contribution to the Garrison Emergency Services Relief Fund. The fund was created by the U.S Bank following the July 11 windstorm disaster that leveled the Garrison Emergency Services Building.  All donations to the fund are being used by the Garrison Fire Department and First Responders in their rebuilding effort.

Cafe 218 owner plans to move to former High 5 building; work under way

Cafe 218 will soon move from its current site to the former High 5 building.        Vinton Steak House.      Country Skillet, a family restaurant.      El Mariachi, a Mexican retaurant.      Jerry Ray's Barbecue.      High 5, a sports bar.      Since 2003, there have been many openings of eating establishments at the site that people of different Vinton generations recall as either Dogs & Suds or The Viking Galley.

Conservation Board meeting canceled

     Tonight's meeting of the Benton County Conservation Board has been canceled. 

Deadline for wind storm assistance set for Oct. 11

  The Benton County Disaster Recovery Coalition has been helping Benton County residents needing aid in recovering from the July 11, 2011windstorm.  If you incurred losses because of the storm, and are at or below 300% of the federal poverty guidelines, you may be eligible for assistance.  The deadline for receiving completed applications is 4pm, Tuesday, October 11, 2011.

Applications for Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program (LiHEAP) begin Oct. 1

  Applications for elderly and disabled persons will be taken starting October 1, 2011 for the 2011-12 Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program (LiHEAP). All other applications will be accepted starting November 1, 2011.  This program is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services through the Iowa Department of Human Rights/Department of Community Action Agencies, and has been established to help qualifying low-income Iowa homeowners and renters pay for a portion of their primary heating costs.

Pizza Hut to resume full menu this week; online ordering not yet available

      Vinton area residents who were looking forward to returning to Pizza Hut after the storm-caused two-month absence have encountered a couple of inconveniences as the restaurant works to return to its full pre-storm service.     Employee Judy Herring told Vinton Today that while the restaurant is open, the online ordering service is not yet functional.

Drivers, spectators honor troops at Benton County Speedway

       The racers and spectators at the Benton County Speedway honored American soldiers Sunday evening, and raised $1,600 for Iowa's Bravest, an organization that sends holiday gift boxes to soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.       Four veterans took a lap around the track in pickup truck provided by Ervin Motors.

ACT I Auditions for Betrayal and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

  This is a reminder that ACT I will be holding adult auditions this weekend for Betrayal by Harold Pinter and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson, and student auditions next weekend for The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.   Adult auditions will be Sunday, September 25 at 2:00 pm and Monday, September 26 at 7:00 pm in the ACT I Studio above Clingman Pharmacy.

VFW honors deceased WWII vet Robert Clark with flag presentation

The flag and other items that honor the memory of WWII veteran Robert E. Clark.      Mark Clark of Cedar Rapids was too young to remember his father, World War II veteran Robert E. Clark. But the veterans of the Vinton VFW Post 8884 have done what they could to help preserve the memory of the soldier for his son.      Post 8884 presented Mark a new U.S. Flag as part of a display of other items in honor of Robert Clark.
