Rains, to say the obvious, are the main reason for flooding.
But, says Jennifer Filipiak, the increase in rainfall does not scientifically explain the increase in flooding in Iowa -- and along the Cedar River -- over the past two decades.
The Vinton Lions Club invited Filipiak to their weekly meeting on Wednesday to discuss the ways that many people are trying to change the Cedar River basin in an attempt to limit the effects of future floods.

Benton County Sheriff Randall Forsyth reports that deputies answered 311 calls for service and investigated 20 accidents. Deputies attempted to serve 293 civil papers and issued 114 traffic citations and 93traffic warnings.
There were 25 arrests/juvenile referrals with 35 charges being filed in August 2011.
(19) were simple misdemeanors, (11) were indictable misdemeanors, and (5) were felony charges.

Vinton Police today arrested Kelly Diane Smith, 28, of Waterloo for attempting to obtain a prescription controlled substance by providing false information, after being alerted by medical staff at the Vinton Family Medical Clinic.
Medical staff became suspicious when the local address Smith provided was determined to be non-existent.

The Lotus Chinese Restaurant opened today in the same building as the popular but troubled Peony Family Restaurant that closed after the previous owners, Chan Duong and Polly Long, began serving their federal prison sentences on immigration violations.
Luc Long, the brother of Polly Long, is the manager of the new restaurant.

Dressed in period costume, the VInton-Shellsburg High School Marching Band drum majors Emma Lippmann and Logan Halstead led the band in its "Gladiator" routine during halftime of the first home football game.
The music comes from the movie by that same name, and includes a dance solo along with several instrumental solos.

Area soldiers and a Waterloo medic who was paralyzed while serving In Iraq will be honored this month at the races.
Sunday, Sept. 18, will be "Support the Troops Night" at the Benton County Speedway.
The solders will be honored during the Parade Lap. One of those to be recognized is Sgt.

At the 2011 Iowa State Fair, the Champion Gilt and Reserve Champion Boar banners went to the Olson Family of Atkins.
IXL Breeding Herds of Toledo earned Reserve Champion Gilt and Premier Exhibitor honors.
The Premier Exhibitor award is presented to the exhibitor earning the highest point total in individual breeding classes of competition.

He hears the names of many of this songs, along with the words, "Les Mis."
Morris, the country star who went to Broadway to play Jean Valjean in "Les Miserables," still has quite a fan following, more than 40 years after beginning his musical career.

Although the MDA "Telethon" only will be on TV for six hours this Labor Day, the connection between Vinton firefighters and "Jerry's Kids" continues as before.
Several firefighters participated in the annual "Fill the Boot" fundraiser, collecting cash and change donations from drivers stopped at the intersection of Fourth Street and C Avenue on Saturday.
