Homecoming royalty to be crowned Thursday evening
The Vinton-Shellsburg Homecoming Parade takes place Thursday evening. Line-up on B Avenue between 4th Street and 7th Street begins at 5:30; the parade begins at 6. The route leads through downtown Vinton on 4th Street then back to the high school along Second Avenue. The Powder Puff game and pep rally take place at the football field at approximately 7 p.
Vinton City Clean-Up: Fees, items allowed listed
The Vinton City Clean-Up takes place this weekend.
The event allows residents of the Vinton city limits to take large discard items to the city brush dump for a nominal fee. The expenses not covered by the cost are paid from the city's solid waste fund (collected from residents via monthly utility bills)
Clean-Up days and times are 7 am.

Keith Bader, who farms in Bruce Township, is the 2011 Owner/Operated Winner of the Iowa Conservation Award for the Benton SWCD. Mr. Bader has used a no till system for both corn and soybeans since the 1980’s on his rolling acres. He was one of the first in the Benton County to do that! Lenard and Marlys Geater have worked diligently over the years to establish a beautiful and functional windbreak for their home and building site. This windbreak includes several kinds of spruce, pine and even Lenard’s experiment with willow hybrid trees. Lenard says he wasn’t sure he liked the willowy looking trees very much, but after the windstorm in July, he likes them a lot more. Benton SWCD Award Winners - Cue's and Boddicker's
Farming the Mary Ann Cue Farm in Polk Township is a two family affair! And a long and productive relationship it has been between the Cue’s and the Boddickers. Mark Boddicker has operated the farm for Ms. Cue for many years. He has implemented no till and conservation tillage systems, established grassed waterways, and has in all ways been a conservation steward for the farm. Benton County CPC Mary Williams and Benton County's state legislators, State. Sen. Tim Kapucian and Rep. Dawn Pettengill, spoke to the supervisors during their meeting Tuesday morning about a new state law that seeks to replace the county system with a regional system.
See You At the Pole: Students pray for school, leaders
Approximately a dozen students and a few adults met for prayer at the flag poles at Vinton-Shellsburg middle and high schools this morning, as part of the nationwide See You At the Pole student-led prayer effort.

In conjunctions with Vinton's Fall Cleanup, Farmer's Savings Bank and Trust will be offering free paper shredding on October 1st, from 9-12.
Bring your old cancelled checks, credit card statements, bank statements, legal papers, income tax files, medical records, financial records, old bills and invoices.
Shredding helps prevent identity theft.
VSHS Homecoming King and Queen candidates named
The Vinton Shellsburgh High School student body met in a short assembly at the end of the school day to learn who the candidates for King and Queen are this year.
Because of a tie, there are 11 finalists in the Queen voting and the traditional 10 candidates for King.
Queen candidates are: Maddie Springer, Emma Horst, Natasha Becker, Tess Noeller, Elle Osborn, Annie Meyer, Brinkley Gerber, Kelly Wagner, Julie Nicole Cox, Kristin Henderson and Claire Riffey. Homecoming messages fill downtown windows
Despite the rain making it more difficult than usual to paint, the VSHS Class of 2012 participated in the senior Homecoming ritual of painting messages on the windows of downtown businesses Monday afternoon.
