City Council elections: Three races have 1 candidate; none for 4th Ward

      Vinton Mayor John Watson and two other people have filed papers for the November city election.       Second Ward incumbent Ron Elwick will seek re-election. Tami Stark is the only at-large candidate; incumbent Don Burkey is not running. Nobody will challenge Watson, whose office is up for re-election every two years.

Cedar-Mt. Auburn FD wins IFA Sportsmanship Trophy

The Cedar-Mount Auburn FD won the Sportsmanship Trophy at the 2012 IFA Convention.      The Cedar-Mount Auburn Fire Department came home with one of the most coveted trophies of the 2011 Iowa Firefighters Association Convention: The Sportsmanship Trophy.      This trophy honors a department for its sportsmanship in the contests of the IFA convention, as well as its willingness to help other departments throughout the event.

Pizza Hut reopens in Vinton

The gas meter was blown into this wall, breaking both the large pipes and part of the brick.        For the first time since July 10, the employees of the Vinton Pizza Hut are answering the phone, asking if this order will be dine-in or carry out.     The restaurant opened shortly after 11 p.m. today, after two months of repair work, and a very busy week of preparation before the final inspection by the Black Hawk County Health Department (which oversees Benton County restaurants) this morning.

Rose Huber plans 11-month, 11-country mission trip

Rose Huber plans to travel to 11 countries during an 11-month mission trip in 2012.        Eleven countries. Eleven months.      That's how Rose Huber of rural Vinton is planning on spending 2012.      The 2007 Vinton-Shellsburg graduate and 2011 graduate of Arcadia University in Philadelphia, Pa., can list the countries in order: Guatemala. Honduras. El Salvador.

VS School Board to meet second Monday of each month

     As required by law, the Vinton-Shellsburg School Board went through the process of retiring the old school board, and installing the new school board, during its meeting on Monday.     This process takes place after each school board election. The new board, of course, is the same as the old board, since all four incumbents who were up for election ran unopposed.

Vinton Women's Club relives story of Dr. Maggie Mangold

Dr. Maggie Mangold told the Vinton Women's Club about growing up in Vinton during their banquet.        Every September, the Vinton Women's Club hears from an area professional during its fall banquet. That person tells the organization about their job, and their childhood.      But last night, the club heard from someone its members have known for decades; someone they knew as a very young child.

Honor Flight participants honor the late Keith Mossman

An empty wheelchair with Keith Mossman's photo and a flag honored the late WWII vet from Vinton.      During the last few years of Keith Mossman's life, his health prevented him from participating in the Eastern Iowa Honor Flights.     But during the most recent Honor Flight, Keith received an honor from those who could participate.  A picture of Keith was carried to Washington DC to honor this WWII Hero.

Tree meetings offer hope, advice for area leaders, property owners

Dozens of home owners received information about repairing and planting Trees Tueday evening.      The first of two meetings about the future of trees in Vinton and other area storm-damaged cities ended with an encouraging comment from a resident of Parkersburg.     "I was driving through Parkersburg yesterday," said Valerie Thorn, whose family survived the 2008 tornado with only damage to their roof from a flying tree limb.

Youth Garden offers lessons on horticulture

Jonathan Kreutner, Kaitlyn Halstead, Sarah Kruetner, Martha Neuzil, Gene Mealhow.       The first goal of the Community Youth Garden was to turn a flood-damaged area into a beautiful place where good things could grow.      The second goal was to help area youngsters learn more about horticulture.     Despite the damage caused to the garden by the July 11 storm, it is clear that the garden is, indeed, teaching area youth more about how and why plants grow.

Future Fish-growers of America: VS Ag program ads aquascience

VSHA Aqua Science students are building the new aquariums in the greenhouse this week.      Since 1930, according to the T-shirts now in progress, the Vinton-Shellsburg Future Farmers of America has been "getting dirty."      Yet as the VS FFA chapter marks its 81st year, the school's newest agriculture class has nothing to do with dirt.       It's all about water, and what Ag class members can raise indoors, without dirt.
