The racers and spectators at the Benton County Speedway honored American soldiers Sunday evening, and raised $1,600 for Iowa's Bravest, an organization that sends holiday gift boxes to soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Four veterans took a lap around the track in pickup truck provided by Ervin Motors. Six drivers walked through the crowd, collecting donations in their helmets.

"It went very well, said Janice Smith, one of the leaders of Iowa's Bravest. "People were very hospitable to the vets, shaking their hands and thanking them."

Approximately $1,600 was raised for the organization, which sent 710 boxes overseas last year. There are fewer soldiers serving there this year, said Smith, so there will be fewer boxes to send this Christmas.

The four veterans who participated in the event were: Brandon Ingle, Traer; Tyler Schott, Waverly; and Courtney and Chris Casiato, Cedar Rapids.
