VS 7th graders win at Little Vikette; 8th graders finish in second

The Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School girls track teams hosted the annual Vikette Invitational on Tuesday. The seventh grade girls won first place; the eighth graders finished in second.  Winners for the 7th graders included: Lauren Upmeyer, high jump; the 4 x 100 relay team; the shuttle hurdle relay team; and the 800 sprint medley team. Eighth grade VS winners included: * Grace Horst, 800 M and 1500M.

New date for IMCA Hawkeye Dirt Tour opener is May 19

VINTON, Iowa (May 12) – Opening night for the Hawkeye Dirt Tour at Benton County Speedway has now been rescheduled for next Tuesday, May 19. The IMCA Xtreme Motorsports Modified feature at Vinton pays $1,000 to win, a minimum of $150 to start and is a qualifier for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. IMCA Sunoco Stock Car and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod features both pay $400 to win while IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks race for a $200 top check.

Vikettes sixth in Wamac Super Golf Meet

Lauren Tandy and Kati Kilpatrick led the Vikettes at the Wamac Super Meet. The Vinton-Shellsburg girls golf team improved from previous years, and finished sixth in the 15-team Wamac Super Meet Monday at the Amana Colonies Golf Course. Lauren Tandy led the Vikettes with a 103, earning ninth place. IMCA Hawkeye Dirt Tour opener postponed

 Windy conditions and forecasts calling for falling temperatures at race time have resulted in postponement of tonight’s IMCA Hawkeye Dirt Tour opener at Benton County Speedway. A new date for the IMCA Xtreme Motorsports Modified series in Vinton is to be announced.  The first Hawkeye Dirt Tour event of the season will be on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25 at I-35 Speed­way in Mason City.

Area Youth compete in in Annual Live Healthy Iowa Kids Track Meet

Colson Chvala won the softball toss in the boys age 5-6 division.      Over 100 area youth ranging in ages from 5 to 14 years old participated in the Vinton Parks & Recreation Department sponsored Live Healthy Iowa Kids Track Meet on Saturday, May 9 at the Karr Athletic Complex. A huge thank you goes out to all the volunteers that generously donated their time to help make this event a success!      All youth that participated received a certificate.

Local bowlers do well at State USBC tournament; several place in top 10

First place at State: Matthew Bookmeier and Parker Arnold won their division at State. The State USBC bowling tournament wrapped up with Berry's Bowler finishing well in all divisions.  Berry's Lanes league bowlers had four teams and six individual bowlers competing in many different divisions.  An individual bowler can bowl up to 3 times in the state competition:   Team (Team of four bowlers)  Doubles (Team up with a fellow USBC bowler) Singles  They can also register to compete in all events, where their competition scores are added up and you are ranked by your total overall score.

Vikettes win last home meet of season

Lauren Tandy's 45 led all golfers during the VS girls golf team's final home meet on Thursday. Olivia Walker earned the silver medal with a 47 as the Vikettes won the four-way event. VS 8th grade boys continue win streak at Little Viking Invitational

Axl Hoepner (right) won the shot put and discus and finished 2nd in the 100 for VS 8th grade. Nolan Haisman set a new school record in the 1600M, breaking the 5-minute mark with a time of 4:58.97; Axl Hoepner threw the discus well enough (137 feet, 11 inches) to have placed second in the most recent high school track meet; he also won the shot put and finished a close second in the 100M dash. Will Dudley won both the 100M and 200M hurdles events.

Hawkeye Dirt Tour comes to Vinton, May 12

The home track of the IMCA Modified division hosts the first event of the 2015 Hawkeye Dirt Tour next Tuesday, May 12. IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds following the sixth annual series race for $1,000 to win and a minimum of $150 to start the lidlifter at Benton County Speedway. The main event is a qualifier for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot.

Vikettes fourth in Wamac West meet; Tandy medals for VS
