Hawkeye Dirt Tour comes to Vinton, May 12

The home track of the IMCA Modified division hosts the first event of the 2015 Hawkeye Dirt Tour next Tuesday, May 12. IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds following the sixth annual series race for $1,000 to win and a minimum of $150 to start the lidlifter at Benton County Speedway. The main event is a qualifier for the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot.

Vikettes fourth in Wamac West meet; Tandy medals for VS

The Vinton-Shellsburg girls golf team finished in fourth place in the Wamac West tournament. Lauren Tandy led the Vikettes with a score of 49 (tied for sixth overall). Team Results: Williamsburg 191 Benton 199

Viking golfers win at the Amana Colonies

The Viking boys played the Amana Golf Course Friday in a quad with Clear Creek Amana, South Tama, and Washington. Tyler Stueck led the way carding a two over 38 to be the medalist. The Vikings won the meet shooing 165, Washington was second with 168, Clear Creek Amana was third with 169, and South Tama was fourth with 213.  Other scores were: Daniel Janssen 41, Mike DeLong 42, Bryce Shaw 44, Austin Carolus 45, and Austin Bohnsack, 48.

Maitland brothers, Wacha reach Victory lane Sunday

Ryan and Brandon Maitland made it a memorable night Sunday at Benton County Speedway. The brothers each reached victory lane in their respective divisions on an exciting night on the quarter-mile. Ryan, in his first full season in the Cassill Motors IMCA Modified division, raced into the lead at the drop of the green with Joe Docekal in tow.

Walker leads Vikettes in dual golf win at CPU

VS boys track team wins big in Viking Invitational

Warrn Rouse won the JV 110M hurdles event and placed in the varsity shot put. The Vinton-Shellsburg boys track team jumped from 18th to 4th in the Class 3A power rankings after its convincing win Thursday in the Viking Invitational. The Vikings scored 154 team points to win the seven-team contest. Marion was second with 121 points. Those finishing first for VS included: Joel Barnes, 200 M and 400 M (Viking Tyler Bartz finished second in each of those events); Derek Dinderman, 800 M; the 4 x 100 relay team.

Leonard sets new school record in 400 as Vikettes win own Invitational

Payton Leonard set a new VS school record in the 400M event on Tuesday. Senior Payton Leonard reached one of her goals on Senior Night, setting a new school record in the 400M dash as the Vinton-Shellsburg girls track team won its own Vikette Invitational. Although she finished 1/100th of a second behind Benton Community's Shelby Hulsebus, Leonard's time of 59.08 was the fastest in Vinton-Shellsburg school history.

Vikettes fourth at West Delaware Invitational Golf Meet

Freshman Rachel Tandy led the Vinton-Shellsburg girls golf team in Monday's meet at West Delaware. The Vikettes finished fourth in the seven-team event. Gustin makes late pass for victory at Benton County Speedway

Jenae Gustin used a pass in the final corner to earn top Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod honors Sunday night at Benton County Speedway. Tony Olson held the lead at the drop of the green in the 20-lapper before Clint Luellen took command following a lap five restart. Meanwhile, Gustin was working through the field from a fifth row start and settled into second just past the midway point.
