Lauren Tandy represents Vinton-Shellsburg at state with 11th place win

Editor's Note: Lauren Tandy finished 11th at the State Golf Meet, June 1-2 at the American Legion Course, Marshalltown. VS girls coach Janet Woodhouse shared this summary with us:  Weather: pleasant V-S contender, Lauren Tandy, qualified for the State Golf Tournament in 4A at Regional Golf in Waverly on May 26. Lauren played strong rounds both days.

Despite pain, Tandy finishes 11th at State Golf Meet

Lauren Tandy finished 11th at the State Golf Meet this week. A year and a half after doctors broke her pelvis bone in three places to repair a rare congenital hip problem, Lauren Tandy continues to recover while playing her favorite sport. Lauren finished 11th this week in the two-day Class 4A State Golf Meet. She qualified for the individual tournament last week. Famous among friends and family for her big smile, Lauren hid her pain with that smile during the 36 holes she played on Monday and Tuesday at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.

Dolan delivers IMCA Late Model win at Benton County Speedway

Ryan Dolan raced the top side to victory in the IMCA Late Model Sunday Series headliner at Benton County Speedway.    Todd Cooney came from the second row to assume command on lap two and was challenged by Sean Johnson for the lead while Dolan worked from a fifth row starting spot.    Dolan settled into fourth place when caution slowed action just prior to the halfway point of the 25-lapper.

Vikettes begin season with 12-5 win

The Vinton-Shellsburg softball team began its season with a 12-5 win over North Tama Wednesday in Vinton. Rachel Tandy and Brea Burroughs pitched for the Vikettes, who had some big innings late.  See the team's stat/schedule page HERE.

Baseball opener: Vikings win two at East Marshall

Zach Boisen pitched five scoreless innings and hit a three-run homer to lead the Vinton-Shellsburg baseball team to its first victory of the season Wednesday evening at East Marshall in LeGrand. Boisen only needed to pitch five as the Vikes won, 10-0 by the 10-run rule which shortened the game. The Vikes won the second game of the varsity double-header, 4-2.

Lauren Tandy to represent VS golf team at State

These Vikettes competed at Regionals. Vinton-Shellsburg golfer Lauren Tandy finished in third place (tied for second with an 18-hole 89) at the Regional Golf Meet in Waverly on Tuesday. That qualifies her for the individual State Tournament in Marshalltown next Monday and Tuesday. 'Great year' for VS track: Several earn medals, set school records at State

Lily, Payton, Bristi and Annika: 4 x 800 team ran their fastest time to earn 9th at State. "What a great year," says V-S girls track coach Heather Kalous, summarizing the team's season as well as their performance at last week's State Track Meet. The Vikings and Vikettes both did very well at state; many set personal bests while earning team points and medals. "They did exactly what they needed to do," says Coach Kalous.

Vikettes win final soccer game on old field; team to play on new turf next year

Lyndsey Cornell scored on this play in the Vikettes' 8-0 win over Monticello. The era of soccer on "the hill" is over.  The Vinton-Shellsburg girls team played the last home game on the field just east of the high school parking lot, where the teams have played since soccer came to VSHS. The girls defeated Monticello, 8-0. The boys played their last home game on that field on Monday.  Next season, both teams will compete on the field turf, sharing it with the football team.
