Vikings fall to Independence at Regional Dual event

The Vinton-Shellsburg wrestling team advanced to the Regional Dual event for the first time, but faced a tough Independence opponent. Just three Vikings (Steve Henry, 285; Max Wehage, 216 and Nick Hyland, 138) recorded victories in a 62-9 loss.  The Vikes had advanced to the Regionals with a 2nd place finish in the sectional meet.  Click HERE for complete results.

VS bowlers do well at District Team event; prepare for individual competition

These bowlers represented VSHS at the first-ever district bowling competition. Last night the varsity Girls and Boys competed in the first Annual District Team Tournament.  With this being the first time for these teams to compete in an event this style, they did very well   The Varsity teams included: BOYS: Cole Garwood, Nick Stein, Jordan Schoettmer, Ben Wood, Jacob Gosse, Tyler Rasmussen. GIRLS: Haley Dinderman, Sierra Goodell, Isabel Dedrick, Erin Wood, Taylor Berry, Alyssa Bunge.

Five Vikes advance to District wrestling event

These five Viking wrestlers advanced to Districts; they will compete next weekend. Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers Michael Neal, Max Wehage, Steve Henry and Nick Hyland won first place in the sectional wrestling event on Saturday. They, along with second-place finisher Dylan Wagner, will compete at the District event next Saturday, Feb. 14, at Aplington-Parkersburg, for a chance to earn a spot in the State Wrestling Meet. The Vikings were also 2nd in team scoring.

From Vikette to Bear: Kathleen Steffen to play volleyball at DMACC

Vinton-Shellsburg senior Kathleen Steffen had been looking for an opportunity to play volleyball on the college level. DMACC coach Patty Harrison had been looking for scrappy setters whose intensity makes them go after the ball on every play. The two found themselves recently, and on Tuesday, Kathleen signed her letter of intent to play college for the next two years at Des Moines Area Community College.

After five years, VSHS Pink Night tradition continues to honor area survivors

Five years ago, at the first Pink Night, a few dozen breast cancer survivors gathered at Vinton-Shellsburg High School. Members of the Vikette basketball team escorted them to the court, as the audience applauded their courage. That first event in the winter of 2010 was the beginning of a new tradition at VSHS, a few new traditions in the Vinton community and led to the forming of a new organization – Benton County Breast Cancer Survivors.

Coach of the Year: Rob Levis earns first award from new swim conference

Coach of the Year: VS swim coach Rob Levis received the award from the newest swimming conference. Because Vinton-Shellsburg is the only Wamac Conference school with a swim team, the Vikings swimmers have joined a new conference known as the North Central Swim Conference. At the inaugural NCSC meet last weekend, V-S came home with the Coaching Staff of the Year Award. Coaches include varsity boys coach Rob Levis, and girls coach Mike Dominick, who has filled in for the boys’ team when Levis has been out of town.

Viking swimmers compete in first NCSC meet; District event Saturday

A season of significant improvement continued Saturday as the Viking swim team travelled to Decorah to participate in the first North Central Swim Conference (NCSC) Meet.  Vinton-Shellsburg finished fifth in the six team meet won handily by Decorah. The top Viking performances on the day included relay finishes of 7th in the 200 Free Relay (Ryan Levis, Caleb Kruckenburg, Matt Upmeyer and Anthony Dickerson), 8th in the 200 Medley Relay (Upmeyer, Levis, Dickerson and Jonah Blix) and 8th in the 400 Free Relay (Kruckenburg, Blix, Upmeyer and Levis).

Vikings lose to Decorah in final home swim meet of season

Vinton-Shellsburg faced off with Decorah Thursday evening in their final home meet of the season, falling in a competitive match by the score of 53-39.  The home team started the meet out with an exciting win in the 200 Medley Relay.  The team of Matt Upmeyer, Ryan Levis, Anthony Dickerson and Jordan Evans edged Decorah’s A relay by 1/100thof a second.

Hyland wins Wamac title at 138; Wehage, Henry also place

Nick Hyland finished first at 138 lbs at the Wamac meet on Saturday. Congratulations to Vinton-Shellsburg wrestler Nick Hyland, who finished first at the Wamac wrestling meet Saturday.  Other Vikings who placed during the event at Western Dubuque included Max Wehage, 3rd at 126; and Steve Henry, 4th at Heavyweight.

Former Viking Cornell earns win for No. 25 Taylor in Florida

Former Vikette Maddie Cornell tossed a complete game shutout for her first W of the college season. Former Vinton-Shellsburg standout pitcher Maddie Cornell earned her first win of the 2015 season this week, as her Taylor University Trojans defeated Northwood in Florida.  Cornell, the daughter of Dave and Kelly Cornell of rural Vinton, pitched a complete game shutout. She is a sophomore at Taylor, which is located in Upland, Ind. Although her team lost the first game in which she pitched (after giving up five unearned runs in one inning), Cornell has an ERA of zero after two games.
