Vikings win at South Tama

The Vikings traveled to Tama Monday to compete in a JV/Varsity golf meet with South Tama. The course was in good shape and the temperatures were good though the golfers did have to compete with the gusty winds. The varsity won their meet shooting 161 beating South Tama who shot 187. The junior varsity also won their part of the meet shooting 173 while South Tama shot 288.

Viking golfers place third at Benton Invite

Bryce Shaw and Tyler Stueck medaled for the Vikings, tying for 10th at the Benton Invite golf meet. The Vikings went to Tara Hills in Van Horne for their first competition of the 2015 year Saturday. The conditions were windy and chilly to start the day on the course but the temperatures did improve while the wind stayed gusty. The Vikings placed third shooting a 330. Bryce Shaw and Tyler Stueck medaled for the Vikings tying for tenth both shooting 81.

Murty collects opening night checkers for ninth time at Benton County Speedway

As he had done eight times in 14 previous seasons, IMCA Stock Car driver Damon Murty took home the checkers on opening night at Benton County Speedway.    Murty started inside of row two and stole the lead from pole-sitter Scooter Dulin by the completion of the first lap to drive away to victory in the 18-lapper.

VS soccer season under way

Quinton Guenther races to the ball during the Vikings' contest with W. Dubuque. The weather was less-than-ideal for the Vinton-Shellsburg boys soccer team in its opening game on Tuesday.  The Vikings hosted Western Dubuque to begin the last soccer season on "The Hill", the land north of the high school that was converted into a soccer field. Next season, the teams expect to play on the new all-purpose field turf at the Karr complex, where football and track and field competitions take place.

VPRD Taking Applications for Adult Softball League

The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department is now taking registrations for adult softball league. If you or if you know of someone that is wanting to get a team together for the summer league, please be sure to turn in your registration form by Friday, April 24th.  Registration forms can be found at the Vinton Recreation Center or online at vprdzone.

Cordes was the last to know he was winner of Frostbuster Modified feature

Troy Cordes, with family and crew, went to Victory lane after the Frostbuster Modified feature. The finish to Thursday’s Frostbuster feature for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds at Benton County Speedway was so close Troy Cordes didn’t know for sure he was the winner until he heard it over his one-way radio. Cordes led most of the 25-lapper after passing Todd Shute following an early restart. He couldn’t find a way around two cars at the back of the field, however, and both Shute and Hunter Marriott caught up in a hurry.

Vikettes medal in many events at Union Early Bird

LaDorshae Mull runs the 100M for the Vikettes; she also ran on two relay teams The Vinton-Shellsburg girls track team competed with several other schools at the Early Bird track meet at Union High School in La Porte City on Thursday. While no official team scoring took place, the Vikettes did very well, placing in the top 3 in 12 events. Those winning for the Vikettes included Bristi Gerber in the 800M run. The Vikettes swept that event, as Lily Horst came in 2nd and Annika Schmidt, 3rd.

Vikings take second in Early Bird meet

Matthew Andreesen runs the 400 hurdles for the Vikings. The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings finally had good weather for the Early Bird track meet, and finished second in Tuesday’s event. Winners for VS included Tyler Bartz, 400M and long jump; Derek Dinderman, 800M and 3200M; and the 4 x 100 relay team. Last year, the event was delayed, and then canceled, because of cold weather.  See complete results HERE.

Gable to hold reading of new book at VSHS today

Iowa wrestling legend Dan Gable will visit Vinton today. Gable will read from his book, "A Wrestling Life," at at Vinton-Shellsburg High School. He will also speak to VSHS students.  Coach Gable will be speaking to students this afternoon beginning around 2:15.  He will begin signing books for the public around 3:30 in the high school commons.

Bowling Hall of Fame officially adds Steve Berry

Steve Berry, with his family, officially joined the Iowa Bowling Hall of Fame today. Steve Berry, accompanied by his wife, Rachelle, daughters Taylor and Steph, and sister Carlyn, officially joined the Iowa Bowling Hall of Fame, joining those who are honored for their bowling ability.  Steve celebrated this great achievement with his family, friends, his fellow teammates and some of his youth bowlers.  Steve's mentor and youth coach (who is 100 years old) was also available to celebrate with him today.
