Eleven countries. Eleven months.
That's how Rose Huber of rural Vinton is planning on spending 2012.
The 2007 Vinton-Shellsburg graduate and 2011 graduate of Arcadia University in Philadelphia, Pa., can list the countries in order: Guatemala. Honduras. El Salvador. Ukraine. Romania. Kenya. Uganda. Tanzania. Thailand. Cambodia. Malaysia.
The 11 are part of the 2012 "World Race," a division of the Adventures in Missions organization. Rose plans to leave in January, as part of one of three 60-member teams who will travel to those countries to serve in a variety of ways. They will cook. They will work with children. They will try to show the victims of human trafficking in Thailand that there are people in the world who sincerely care for them.
Rose is the daughter of Jim and Connie Huber, and member of Prairie Creek Christian Church. Her church and family are helping Rose begin to raise the money she needs for the trip.
Rose loves to travel; she's been to 20 countries and every continent except South America since 2005. She choose Arcadia University because of its international programs. And Rose is looking forward to living in community with dozens of people in her age group in a variety of places throughout the world.
But the main reason for going she said, is helping people. Rose spent a couple of months before signing up for the journey thinking about why to do it.
"I want to serve people, and tell them about Christ," she said.
The entire trip, including travel, food and housing, will cost $15,500. The first fund-raising effort is a garage sale today through Saturday at the home of Lois Martin, who lives across the street from the Ray House. There are a variety of items, but no prices; everything is offered on a donation basis.
Rose also plans some future fund-raising events, including a dinner at her church; and is seeking sponsors.
