In Depth - Ice Age: Continental Drift

  One last flick for the kids before school resumes! “Ice Age: Continental Drift” in 3D opens Friday, August 10 at the Palace, and runs through Thursday, August 16 at 7 p.m. every night, and in matinees at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Monday, and 4 p.m. on Wednesday. This PG-rated movie is perfect for the younger set. The animated “Ice Age 4” runs just 84 minutes and receives its rating due to mild action and peril, and a bit of rude humor.

Reasons to see 'A Midsummer Night's dream'

Puck (Aspen Auld) and First Fairy (Katie Hancock) meet in the opening scene. If you like Shakespeare, you have to go see the ACT 1 production of "A MidSummer Night's Dream." If you don't love Shakespeare, you still ought to go.  I went, on Tuesday, during one of the week's first dress rehearsals for the show that opens tonight (Friday, Aug. 3). It's impressive: The costumes. The actors.

Did you miss me?  I took the week off last week, so no column for “The Amazing Spider-Man.”  Honestly, how many Spider-Mans do we need?  I plead writer’s block.  Fortunately, you do not depend solely on my words of wisdom – the theatre has been packed! And we look for that trend to continue this week with ”Rock of Ages” and “Magic Mike.

  This week will be a busy week in Vinton with RAGBRAI, the Benton County Fair and the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School’s Alumni Reunion.  Amidst all this, on Saturday July 28, 2012 will be the much anticipated “A Conversation with Mary Ingalls” at 3:00 p.m. in the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School auditorium.

Captured by pirates, John Baker and his children are sure they’re going to have to walk the plank, but their luck changes when they meet some caring damsels in distress and very clever rats on Blackbeard’s ship.

  This is a great-looking movie, much enlivened by the inspiration of giving Merida three small brothers, little redheaded triplets. The Scottish Highlands are thrillingly painted in astonishing detail, and some action shows Merida's archery more than equal in assorted emergencies.

  The Palace is stacked this weekend with “Madagascar 3” in 3D and the R-rated “That’s My Boy.” Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are still fighting to get home to New York. Their journey takes them through Europewhere they joina traveling circus, Madagascar style! “Madagascar 3” runs 93 minutes and is rated PG for mild action and some rude humor.

2012 VS grad Lizzy Moen to sing at Jones County Fair

Lizzy Moen sings during the Party in the Park 'Riverside's Got Talent' event. Elizabeth (Lizzy) Moen, a 2012 Vinton-Shellsburg graduate, will perform from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, on the Free Stage of the Great Jones County Fair.  Moen has been singing for years, both in school projects and individually. She most recently performed during Party in the Park, where she was chosen as the winner of the "Riverside's Got Talent" event.

Challenge of Shakespeare inspires many to join ACT 1's 'Midsummer Night's Dream'

Mikala Niemeier and Austin Lauterwasser rehearse for 'A Midsummer Night's Dream.' Sometime this month, you just might see a familiar ACT 1 performer, or an a area high school drama teacher, walking along a Vinton street, or sitting on a bench, saying things like “Lord, what fools these mortals be” and “The course of true love never did run smooth.” It was on such a bench that long-time ACT 1 actress Rachel Kramer opened her eyes to the magic that is Shakespeare.

Cinematography is great and you will see some of your favorite actors in different roles.
