Area Golfers place in competition

Tyler Stueck & Lauren Tandy placed in the CR Junior Optimist Golf tourney   The Cedar Rapids Junior Optimist Golf tourney was held on Monday, July 23rd, at Ellis Golf Course.    Due to extreme heat conditions the tourney was taken from an 18 hole event to a 9 hole event.  In the Boys 13-14 division Tyler Stueck placed 1st out of 25 boys with a 3 over 39.  In the girls 15-18 division Erin Randall placed 2nd out of 6 girls with a 43.

Two Luloffs among winners at Benton County Speedway

Dick Frye Memorial featured at Indee Speedway

  For the sixth consecutive year at Independence Motor Speedway, the weekly racing program during the Buchanan County Fair was held in honor of longtime fairboard president Dick Frye. Frye, who passed away in 2007, was president of the Buchanan County Fair Association for over 40 years and dedicated much of his time to the community through his role on the fairboard.

Lauren Tandy first, Tyler Stueck fifth in CR Optimist Jr. Golf Tourney

On Wednesday, July 18 Vinton golfers Lauren Tandy and Tyler Stueck played in the Cedar Rapids Optimist Junior golf tournament at Jones Park. Tyler shot a 88 on 18 holes and placed 5th in his age division. Lauren shot a 49 on 9 holes and placed 1st in her age division. 

Benton defeats Vikings to advance to Sub-State baseball game

Alex Springer pitches in the first inning of the Vikings' game vs. Benton.   Benton Community came to Vinton Monday night, having defeated every team it has played this year – with the exception of a season-opening loss to Class 4A Iowa City West. The Bobcats (33-7) defeated the Vikings 7-1 to advance to the Substate contest Wednesday in Solon. That game begins at 7 p.m. in Vinton. Benton’s losses all occurred in double headers in which the Bobcats won the other game.

Hawaiian and Fuzzy Friends Night at Benton County Speedway July 22

Aloha! The Benton County Speedway will host Hawaiian and Fuzzy Friends night on Sunday, July 22. Fans are encouraged to wear Hawaiian shirts and bring supplies for Friends of the Shelter that night. Everyone who participates will be entered into a drawing for a gas grill provided by Mike & Susan Benson, Judy Burkey, Ryan Clark and Lon's Plumbing & Heating.

July 14 program rained out at Independence Motor Speedway

  After 10 consecutive Saturdays of racing, Mother Nature finally had her way as heavy rains forced the cancellation of the July 14 racing program at Independence Motor Speedway.   The program was scheduled to be Independence Area Chamber of Commerce Night. Gustin wins Hogan Memorial in Vinton

Richie Gustin poses in Victory Lane after winning the Hogan Memorial.   Richie Gustin worked the high side past Dan Chapman, then held off persistent challenges from Chapman and Jerry Luloff to drive to the IMCA Modified win in the 18th annual Hogan Memorial Sunday at Benton County Speedway.  For his efforts, Gustin earned $1,250 for winning the race, in addition to $250 for leading at half­way and $1,650 in lap money for the 33 circuits he led.
