Blackout Night, Spirit Towels to help rally Vikings at home opener

Painting of the sidelines and other field markings prepares the field for the first V-S home game. Scott Merchant said his original goal with the gold Spirit Towels was to have enough to give to every student at Vinton-Shellsburg High School. "We've been trying to encourage more students to attend the games," said Merchant this morning. But the sponsors with whom Merchant shared his ideas wanted to do even more; they have paid for 1,000 towels, which will be distributed both to students and to adults attending tonight's game.

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings began the era of coach Jim Womochil with a big win on the kind of field he envisions for his home turf, and the kind of offense that includes “passing when we want to, not when we have to.” The Vikings defeated Benton Community 48-0, on the new turf at Van Horne.
