Vikings defeat Huskies in District opener, 48-18

Kelyn Rickels scored three touchdowns, the last on a kickoff return, as the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings defeated Oelwein, 48-18. The Vikings built a 28-0 lead before the Huskies scored, and led 35-12 at halftime.

After dressing in black and waving gold Spirit Towels during last Friday's game, the Vinton-Shellsburg football fans dressed in brightly-colored clothes for Friday night's game.

Vikettes finish 4th in Grinnell XC meet; boys 6th

The Vinton-Shellsburg Cross Country teams finished fourth (boys) and sixth (girls) at Grinnell on Tuesday evening. Lily Horst led the VS girls, finishing 4th, while Ricky Jeray was the first Viking runner to cross the finish line, in 19th place overall.

  Vinton’s Scott Hogan won the feature in the Modifieds class at the Benton County Speedway on Sunday, Sept. 2. Sports Mod winner Mike Hogancamp celebrated his first trip to Victory Lane.

A stout field of 111 teams filled the pit area for Budweiser Season Championship Night at Independence Motor Speedway. A trio of drivers topped off track championships by taking home feature wins on the final night of the 2012 season.

Vikings lose to S. Tama; host District opener vs. Oelwein Sept. 7

The Vinton-Shellsburg football team heads into district play next week with a 1-1 record following Friday's loss at home to South Tama. The Viking offense struggled throughout the first half, as the Trojans built a 27-0 lead.

Blackout Night, Spirit Towels to help rally Vikings at home opener

Scott Merchant said his original goal with the gold Spirit Towels was to have enough to give to every student at Vinton-Shellsburg High School. "We've been trying to encourage more students to attend the games," said Merchant this morning.
