Front row of the Balcony: What makes 'Secretariat' so inspiring

I remember reading, years ago, the account of a young child who met Man O’ War, one of the most famous racing horses of the 20th Century. Writing about that encounter years later, that woman recalled how that as a child, she could tell that the horse seemed to be aware of its greatness, and eager to share its story with humans.

'Educating Rita:' ACT 1 sponsors Old Creamery Theatre event in Vinton

Local theater lovers saw 'Educating Rita' at Vinton Country Club last weekend. Members of ACT 1 sponsored the two-person performance of "Educating Rita" by Deborah Kennedy and Tom Milligan of the Old Creamery Theatre Company last weekend at the Vinton Country Club.  The play features a crusty old professor who is asked to become a teacher for an eccentric woman.  "It's pretty impressive, that they have this show ready to perform at any time," said Steve Arnold of ACT 1.

Front Row of the Balcony: 'Life' raises questions worth asking, in a clever way

Don’t let the poster fool you.        Seeing a man in his underwear, simultaneously chasing a baby and drinking a beer, may give you the impression that “Life As We Know It” is just another dumb child-rearing movie from Hollywood – where many of the biggest stars hire people to raise, or even give birth to, their babies.

Secretariat arriving at the Palace as well as Holiday Specials

The Palace Theatre is off and running this holiday season with “Secretariat,” playing Friday November 26 through Thursday, December 2 at 7 p.m. nightly, and Saturday and Monday, November 27 and 29 at 2 p.m. Based the true story of the amazing 1979 Triple Crown winner (I remember this being BIG news when I was in high school), “Secretariat” stars Diane Lane and John Malkovich as owner and trainer, respectively.

From the Front Row of the Balcony: 'Social Network' is a smartly-told true story

My main criticisms about most movies is that they are – in two words – intellectually dull.      Most are predictable and have about as much dialog as a hockey game.      “The Social Network,” playing on the Palace screen through Thursday night, is an exception.

'Life as we know it', Iowa Football AND A FREE MOVIE

“When’s that one coming?  My mom can’t wait to see that one,” asked a teen at the theatre last night, while hanging out in the lobby with his younger brother, waiting for the movie to begin.  He was referring to the poster for “Life As We Know It,” which plays the Palace this week – Friday, November 19 through Thursday November 25 at 7 p.

'The Social Network' and 'The Town' coming this weekend to Palace

As an admitted Facebook junkie, I’m looking forward to “The Social Network,” the story of how Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) came up with the idea in his university dorm room to create Facebook. “The Social Network” opens Friday, November 12 at 7 p.m. and plays every evening through Thursday, November 18.

'You Again' opens at Palace; also see Gary Morris and 'Sound of Music'

Big laughs at the Palace this week when “You Again” opens on Friday, November 5.  Playing every evening (EXCEPT SUNDAY!) at 7 p.m. through Thursday, November 11, and Monday, November 8 at 2 p.m., this star-studded romp brings 118 minutes of PG fun. Two high school social competitors are reintroduced when an upcoming wedding forces a meeting.

Guardian owls (in 3D) and Gary Morris coming to Palace

Bring your friends and thrill to the Only $3 3D in the World at the Palace Theatre this week! “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole” opens Friday, October 29 through Thursday, November 4 at 7 p.m. nightly, and Saturday and Monday at 2 p.m. Following the Saturday Spooktacular Parks and Recreation Trick or Treating downtown, kids can enjoy FREE POPCORN for the October 30th 2 p.

The only disappointment in seeing 'Get Low:' Empty seats at Palace

A few weeks ago, Charles Osgood and his CBS Sunday Morning crew explored the decline in attendance at movie theaters across the United States. The solution to that situation is on the Palace screen this week: If Hollywood wants more people to come to the movies, they will make more movies like "Get Low."  I had never even heard of "Get Low" until I went to the Palace to take photos of the renovation and installation of the new screen.
