In Depth: Harry Potter is back!

It’s a toss up – is my favorite Harry Potter magic the flying broomsticks or the invisibility cloak? Harry, Hermione and Ron materialize, literally, onto the Palace big screen this Friday, December 31 through Thursday, January 6 at 7 p.m. nightly, and Monday, January 3 at 2 p.m. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part One” is rated PG-13 and runs 146 minutes.

Front Row of the Balcony: 'Tangled' a smart, feel-good film for all

The Palace was nearly full Christmas night, with families who had come to see the animated fairy tale “Tangled.”      “Tangled” is a perfect holiday movie, a feel-good film with lots of adventure, a little romance and a fairly-tale ending. It’s the kind of modern animated movie that kids and adults both can love.

Unstoppable: A fun, wild if not entirely historically accurate ride

Train lovers filled the Palace Sunday evening for “Unstoppable,” the Denzel Washington movie about a runaway train.      Based – very, very loosely – on a true story (more about that later) the movie tells the story of how a runaway train threatened southern Pennsylvania; and how an about-to-be retired engineer Frank Barnes (Washington) and a rookie conductor, Will Colson (played by Chris Pine) saved the day.

Yes! The Palace is open on Christmas Eve and Christmas! “Tangled” plays a 2 p.m. only show on the 24th and a 7 p.m. show on the 25th. Staffer Tony Bopp will man the helm on Christmas Eve, with the Horsts in concessions, and the Horst Family, with volunteer Nancy Good in the box office, will cover the actual holiday. As Gerald and Tony are both “men of good cheer,” I predict lots of give-aways during those two shows! “Tangled,” rated PG, is the 3D animated adventure of Rapunzel and her smoldering rescuer Flynn Rider.

“The movie is as relentless as the train, slowly gathering momentum before a relentless final hour of continuous suspense. In terms of sheer craftsmanship, this is a superb film.” Roger Ebert. “Unstoppable” with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine, plays the Palace Friday, December 17 through Thursday, December 23 at 7 p.

Front Row of the Balcony: 'Megamind' highlights benefits of 3D effects

Those of you who donated to the Palace digital campaign can see in this week’s movie the full result of your efforts.      “Megamind” in 3D astounded the audience – especially its children – with its 3D and surround sound effects. Even the previews – of "Tangled" and "Yogi Bear" – looked great in 3D.

Christmas synonyms: Can you identify these songs?

Multisyllabic expressions are intermittently an essential aspect of my preferred modus operandi for communications, as well as entertainment.      In other words, I like to use big words, not only for more effective communication with other people, but also, sometimes, just for the fun of it.        So, when we had a Christmas Hymn Synonym contest at a church Christmas party a few years ago, I found a funderful idea for a column.

Morning Glory and Due Date arriving at the Palace this weekend

The Palace is stacked this weekend, when “Morning Glory,” rated PG-13 and “Due Date,” rated R open Friday. MORNING GLORY “Morning Glory,” starring Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton and Jeff Goldblum, plays December 10th through the 16th every evening at 7 p.m., and Monday at 2 p.m. “You know, this is the one about the morning news show, with Harrison Ford and Rachel McAdams.

'Megamind in 3-D' comes to the Palace

The very first bit of 3D film I saw on our brand new digital projector last July was the movie trailer for “Megamind.” And I’ve been waiting impatiently ever since! “Megamind in 3D” opens Friday, December 3 through Thursday, December 9 at 7 p.m. every night, with added 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, December 4-6.
