Freshman Horst leads VS Cross Country team with 9th place finish

VSHS CC members prepare to leave for DM. Vinton-Shellsburg freshman Lily Horst finished in 9th place in the Class 3A Girls race at the 2012 State Cross Country event in Fort Dodge on Saturday. Bristi Gerber, another freshman, finished 18th. The VSHS boys team, led by Ricky Jaray ( who finished in 30th place), was 13th in the state in Class 3A. See complete results HERE.

VSHS Cross Country runners ready for State

The VS Band drum line salutes the VSHS boys cross country team. Running in the halls was briefly permitted Friday afternoon at Vinton-Shellsburg High Schoo, where the student body stood in the hallway to cheer and offer high fives to the members of the boys cross country team and freshmen girls Lily Hort and Bristi Gerber. Lily and Bristi will compete at noon on Saturday at the Fort Dodge Golf Course, in the Class 3A girls state cross country meet.

Wrestling labor auction raises $7,700

VSHS wrestlers and their managers line up before the 2012 Labor Auction Thursday evening. Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers raised $7,700 during their annual labor auction Thursday evening. Area residents and  businesses  bid on the services of the wrestlers and managers, with Duane Johnson again serving as auctioneer.  The fund-raiser will help cover the cost of equipment, wrestling camp and other expenses of the program.

Union advances with first-round route of Mt Vernon

The Union Knight motto this year is First Strike. They did strike first and put it in the end zone again and again, building a 56-20 first half lead and defeating Mt. Vernon, 63-20 in first-round playoff action. In a crazy game that featured three kickoff returns in first half for TDs (two by Union, {Scheel, Carey} and one by Mt Vernon) and a punt return for TD (Hadachek) it was a special teams clinic.

Senior Night: Class of 2012 athletes, band members honored

Senior Viking Colton Draker and his parents joined the Senior Night tradition. The Vinton-Shellsburg football season came to an end with Friday' s home loss to Crestwood, 31-14. The game took place in the rain, and the field was already muddy by the start of the varsity game, leaving many uniforms covered with mud by the end of the game. The Vikings end the season 3-6. Senior athletes and band members were introduced, along with their parents, before the varsity game.

VS boys advance to CC State Meet; along with freshmen girls Horst and Gerber

VSHS freshmen Bristi Gerber and Lily Horst advanced to the State Cross Country Meet. The District XC was held Thursday on the Wartburg XC course in Waverly.   In the girls event, VSHS runners Lily Horst took 2nd and Bristi Gerber took 3rd.   Wyatt Lyons took 10th place and overall, the VSHS boys placed 3rd, sending the whole team to the state meet,. Lily and Bristi advanced to the Girls State Cross Country Meet as individuals.

VS swimmers set more records at Charles City

Savannah Jensen, Katie King, Emily Freeland & Lauren Krupa set school record in 200 Freestyle Relay.   Tuesday was yet another record breaking evening as the Vinton-Shellsburg Union lady swimmers continued their season-long assault on the record books. Three more program swimming bests fell in Charles City as the ladies turned in their best team performance of the year in finishing a close third at the annual Charles City Invitational.
