Grant Sagan scores 34; Vikings 11-0 after big win vs. Columbus

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings are 11-0 now, tied with five other teams for the best win-loss record in all of Iowa. The Vikings defeated Waterloo Columbus, 78-43, on their home court Tuesday evening.  Grant Sagan led the top-rated basketball team in class 3A, with 34 points, making 13 of his 15 shots, including three of four 3-point attempts.

Vikings win first home meet of season; defeat Waterloo East

  The Vinton-Shellsburg men’s swim team kicked off its home schedule with a win over visiting Waterloo East Thursday night at the Iowa Braille School pool.  The young Vikings squad celebrated senior night with a wire to wire 57-34 victory.   The Vikes started fast taking first and second in the Medley Relay.

No. 1 Vikings win again; defeat Union, 69-57

With four of the five starters in double digits for scoring, and with Class 3A assist leader Max Kearns dishing out 10 more, the Vinton-Shellsburg VIkings built an early 23-8 lead over Union Thursday and won 69-57.  The top-ranked team in Class 3A since the last week before the Christmas break, the Vikings are now 9-0 heading into tonight's game at Mount Vernon.

A little of everything in 2013 for area racers and fans

The 31st consecutive season of IMCA weekly racing and an expanded special events schedule await race fans at Independence Motor Speedway in 2013.   IMCA-sanctioned Late Models, Modifieds, Stock Cars, SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts will again be showcased during the Saturday night program. The weekly battles are scheduled to begin April 27 and run for 18 Saturdays through the August 24 season championships.

Still perfect: Strong finish gives Vikings 70-55 win over Benton

Up by only a point with just under a minute to go in the third quarter, the Vinton-Shellsburg boys rallied for a 70-55 win at home against Benton Community to keep their season perfect. The Vikings scored 30 of their points in the last nine minutes of the game, including 11 straight to make the score 51-39 with sixt minutes to play. The Vikings head into the Christmas break 8-0 and ranked first in the state in Class 3A.

NUMBER 1! Vikings reach top of polls for first time in school history

Less than two hours before their 72-23 win over South Tama, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings were named the top Class 3A boys basketball team in Iowa. The Vikings earned six of the 14 first-place votes in the third AP poll of the season. Long-time retired Viking coach Ken Stark, who was attending the game, said as far as he knows the Vikings have never been ranked No.

Vikings remain undefeated; host ST, Benton this week.

  The Vinton-Shellsburg boys basketball team escaped last week’s road trip with its undefeated record intact. The Vikings built a 35-23 half-time lead at Center Point-Urbana, but needed every one of those 12 points to hold on for a two-point win, 59-57, last Tuesday. Then on Friday, they traveled to Marion, where they won by 8, 70-62.

Vikette pitcher Maddie Cornwell signs with Taylor University

Teammates Devon Ankney and Katie Hanson also joined the signing ceremony. Surrounded by her parents, coaches and teammates, Maddie Cornell agreed to spend the next four years as a student-athlete at Taylor University in Indiana. Maddie will graduate in May of 2013 and will join her sister, Lexy, at Taylor. Maddie started 19 games for the Vikettes last year, and ended the season with a 13-5 record and a 3.42 ERA.  Dave Cornell said the Maddie and her family choose Taylor because they were looking for a Christian college in the Midwest that had a strong softball program.
