Joel Neve chosen as VSHS head wrestling coach

Joel Neve, in front of former VS head wrestling coach Steve Johnson, has been hired to replace him. A former Viking wrestler who says he initially hung around the mats after graduating so he could help a teammate has been chosen to be the next head wrestling coach at Vinton-Shellsburg. Joel Neve received the offer on Monday after an interview with AD Jim Struve. His hiring will become official when the VS School Board formally approves it.

Alumni Football game Friday at Center Point; silent auction of UI helmet planned

This helmet with a camouflage theme will be sold via silent auction at Alumni USA game Friday. Former Iowa Hawkeye and NFL player Tim Dwight will be an honorary captain for CPU during the Alumni USA Football game between Vinton-Shellsburg and Center Point-Urbana alumni teams in Center Point this Friday. A silent auction for an American Forces Network helmet -- possibly signed by Tim Dwight -- will be part of Friday's activities in Center Point.

Justin Stander wins Hobby Stock feature at Independence Motor Speedway

The Justin Stander drove his car to victory in the Hobby Stock feature in Independence, June 1. INDEPENDENCE – Justin Stander of Shellsburg, an employee of Tharp Design (one of his sponsors) won the Hobby Stock feature race in Independence to begin the month of June on area dirt tracks. Stander began the race in fifth and passed leader Vince Buchholz as the white flag waved and led the final lap before taking the checkered flag. Modified Feature winner: Troy Cordes Although Troy Cordes only led for a couple of feet, it was the two feet that mattered Saturday night at Independence Motor Speedway.

Red Cedar Shooters finish 7th in the State

Seventh in State: VS Red Cedar Shooters do well at State event; Sara Jorgensen 8th among females. The Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters remain in the top ten Trap Shooting teams in the State for a third consecutive year after a 7th Place finish at the Iowa High School Trap Shooting Championships held in Cedar Falls on Friday.   The Red Cedar team ended their regular season on May 18th, ranked 12th in the State in league standings going into the State Meet, out of 122 participating Iowa high school teams.

Day 2 of Girls Individual Meet canceled: VS golfers among top 21

Natalie Ketchen, left and Erin Randall will compete again Wednesday in the State Individual Meet. With three-time state champioin Jessica Sindlinger of Charles City leading the field at 8-under par, the rest of the Class 4A field in the girls golf meet remained above par after Day 1 of the State Girls Individual Golf Meet, with the exception of Mackenzie Black of Independence, who made par of 73 to finish second. Vinton-Shellsburg golfer Natalie Ketchen finished with a 91, tied for 17th place; Vikette Erin Randall carded a 94 and is tied for 21st heading into Wednesday's Day 2 at the Ames Golf & Country Club.

Vinton bowler joins area Hall of Fame

Bowling Hall of Fame: Darrin Lindsey A Vinton man who was still a teenager when he bowled his first perfect game is now a member of the Greater Cedar Valley USBC Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Darrin Lindsey was inducted May 15. He has lived in Vinton since 1985, when his family moved here from Waterloo. He was already a very successful bowler; he was 17 when he threw his first 700 game in the YABA Hot Shot League; six months later he achieved his first 300 game.

500 wins! Vikings sweep two double-headers to earn milestone for Coach Struve

Viking Coach Jim Struve has led VS teams to 500 wins in his HS coaching career. After losing a one-point game at home against South Tama to start the 2013 season, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings won their next four, giving Coach Jim Struve his 500th win as a high school coach. The Vikings swept East Marshall at Le Grand on Wednesday, then defeated Independence twice on Thursday. The first honor bestowed upon Coach by his players was an informal, spontaneous one: An ice shower from the team's cooler.

VS Diamond Update: Struve could reach 500 milestone tonight; Vikettes blank ST

After two wins at East Marshall on Wednesday, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings are 2-1 on the 2013 season, and Coach Jim Struve is two wins away from joining the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association 500 Wins Club.  The Vikings could give Coach Struve his 500th win tonight, as they host Independence in a varsity doubleheader.  Vikettes shut out South Tama A day after senior pitcher Maddie Cornell gave up no earned runs against Belle Plaine, sophomore pitcher Brea Burroughs shut out the South Tama Trojans in a 10-0 victory for the Vikettes.

'Play Ball!' Vikings, Vikettes begin 2013 season

Luke Moen started the opening game for the Vikings. The high school soccer players and golfers put away their clubs and plastic cleats and traded their spheroids and gloves and footwear for those of a different type. Baseball and softball season is under way. Both the Vikings and Vikettes opened the season with home games. The Vikings were down by five to S. Tama, but rallied in the last two innings to cut the deficit to one.

Tiffany Auen leads Red Cedar Shooters in last home meet; State event next

Caleb Svoboda The Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters Trap team won its final meet of the regular season Saturday at the Izaak Walton League, hosting Cedar Rapids Jefferson in a dual meet. The Red Cedar Shooters Gold Squad took the squad honors for the day with a 212/250 for the event.  Black Squad was right behind with a 210/250. Top Shooter honors for the day went to Red Cedar's Senior Tiffany Auen, who shot a 46/50, a personal best.
