Local Golfer Gets Hole in One at Belle Plaine Country Club

Tom Radcliffe, a member of the Vinton Country Club shot a hole in one at the Belle Plaine Country Club on Tue. July 23rd, 2013.  Tom was in a 50 and over tournament and shot his hole in one from the forward tees on the 7th hole - 245 yards. Par 4.   He was with a group of golfers from Vinton: Carlton Root, Bill Guider and Okie Walker Sr.

Benton shuts out Vikings to advance to Sub-State game

Benton Community senior Jonny Frese improved his record to 6-2 with a complete game, one-hit shutout of the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings in the District final Tueday night. Benton advances to the Sub-State game; the Vikings end their season with a record of 17-25. Benton scored one run in the first, four runs in the third and two in the fourth while playing strong defense behind Frese.

Hogan earns spot on All-Start ballot for Boone race; votes will decide who races

His March 29 win qualified Scott Hogan for the Boone All-Star ballot; votes to decide if he races. When Vinton Modified racer Scott Hoganon the March 29 Spring Extravaganza feature at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, he qualified for the ballot for the Fast Shafts All-Star race in Boone on Sept. 6.   Votes by racing fans will determine if Hogan has the opportunity to compete in this race.    "This is the 10th annual event; Hogan was runner-up in 2005, the only other time he was elected to the field.

Ervin's pitching leads Vikings to District win over Grinnell

Coach Jim Struve, catcher Aaron Henderson and the Vikings congratulate Daniel Ervin on his victory. Senior Daniel Ervin pitched his second consecutive complete game, giving up just one run to the Grinnell Tigers, as the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings extended their season and came one game closer to going to the State Tournament. The Vikings defeated Grinnell, 3-1 on Friday.  Playing on the Benton Community field -- where both district games and the Sub-State game are scheduled -- the Viking offense relied on small ball, getting batters on base and advancing them with bunts and sacrifice flies.

VS wrestling camp set for July 29-13; free for all district wrestlers

Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers are invited to a free wrestling camp, where they will meet the new coach of the Viking wrestling club, All-American wrestler James Locke. Camp takes place Monday, July 29, through Wednesday, July 31, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. While the camp is free for VS wrestlers, cost is $30 for those from other school districts. Wrestlers of all ages and all levels of experience are invited.

Current, future Viking football players learning fundamentals

Young QBs and receivers work on fundamentals each Wednesday night. “Little ‘c,’ not big ‘C.’ “Nose to the ball.” “Smash.” “Flood.” “41.” Vinton-Shellburg Viking football players – present and future – are learning the meaning of these words in seven-on-seven workouts every Wednesday night at an “open field” practice behind Tilford Elementary.

A beginning photographer's night at the races

Vinton racer Danny Dvorak takes a corner on three wheels. Confession: I have not watched a dirt track race in Vinton since the “Figure 8” track was in use. Oh, I have been to the grandstands at the Benton County Fairgrounds many times each year for Fair and Boomtown events, but never to the races. When Jolyne Hogan sent out a Facebook invitation to the Hogan Memorial, I thought it would be a good chance to learn how to take racing photos while also being part of a great event in honor of one of the 20th Century leaders in my profession.

Carlisle earns 12th trip to State with 7-0 win over V-S

The Carlisle softball team welcomes visitors to its field with a large red and white sign listing 11 years the team has made it to the State Tournament since 1993, and the four times the Wildcats have been State Champions. Under the scoreboard is gold sign listing the 15 times the team has won its conference since 1989. On the field, Wildcat players keep showing visiting teams why.

Crash course: Dirt track racing includes tough moments for many drivers

Modified drivers often use just three of their four tires when making turns. Contact between vehicles is a part of dirt track racing; most cars that circled the track at the Benton County Speedway have scars from encounters with other vehicles.  Here are a few photos from Sunday's Hogan Memorial that show how a quarter mile dirt track can indeed be a crash course. Because of the risk of collision and injury and fire, the Vinton Fire Department and North Benton Ambulance Service have vehicle and personnel at every race.

Hard work, teamwork help 'scrappy' Vikettes advance to Regional final

“ONE! ONE! ONE!” Vinton-Shellsburg catcher Rachel Clemens says she was not thinking double play as she stood with her foot on home plate, waiting for the throw from pitcher Maddie Cornell. The Vikettes were hanging on to a one-run lead when Benton Community loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning and nobody out. Cornell had just struck out the Bobcat catcher; the next batter hit a bouncer back to the Vikette pitcher.
