Hershey's Track Meet: Sarah Schminke wins state long jump event

Timothy Kramer from CP-U, ran at the Vinton meet and won the 100M at the State Meet. Two of the Vinton winners of the Hershey's Track Meet also won first place in their events at the State event last weekend.  Sarah Schminke won in the standing long jump event. Timothy Kramer, a student at Center Point-Urbana, won the 100M race in his age group.  Others from the area who placed are mentioned in the photos.

Viking golfer Stueck finishes ninth at Iowa PGA Jr. Tour

Viking golfer Tyler Stueck, shown in an earlier VSHS meet, finished 9th in Iowa PGA Jr. event. Tyler Stueck, a freshman at Vinton-Shellsburg High School, played in the PGA Junior Tour at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course this past weekend. There were over 200 participants. Stueck tied for 9th place out of 53 in his division, he shot a 82 (+10) on a par 72.  

Alumni Football: Viking rally falls short; CPU wins 21-12

The Vinton-Shellsburg alumni football went to Center Point, hoping to reverse the first two years of their participation in Alumni USA football. But a 21-0 first half lead was too much for the Vikes to overcome. CPU held on for a 21-12 win, although the Viking offense made some terrific second-half plays, and even recovered an on-side kick late in the game.

Vikettes down five, rally to win 11-10, split with W. Dubuque

After losing their first game against Western Dubuque, 2-1 after a seventh inning Bobcat run broke a 1-1 tie, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes got off to a horrible start in Game 2, falling behind 5-0 by the second inning. But the Vikettes rallied to win that game, 11-10. V-S has now defeated every team it has played, and is 7-3 on the 2013 season.

Independence Motor Speedway cancels June 6 special

Due to wet track and pit area conditions, the Thursday, June 6, Entry Level Extravaganza at Independence Motor Speedway has been canceled. Although the special event for IMCA SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts will not be rescheduled, the increased purse planned for that event will be offered during an upcoming weekly program at the speedway.

Four VS golfers compete at State Coed meet; Rippel, Randall 14th

State Coed Meet: Dylan Rippel, Erin Randall, Natalie Ketchen and Daniel Janssen. Four V-S students participated in the State Coed Golf Tournament at Bos Landen Golf Course in Pella on Tuesday.  This is a very challenging course that is difficult to walk; it is lengthy and hilly.  There are many lateral hazards and sand bunkers; the rough and no mow areas were exceedingly thick and long.  The greens are undulating and the pin placements were tricky.

VSHS Softball: Vikettes improve to 6-2

Sophomore Brea Burroughs has pitched 10 consecutive shut-out innings and senior pitcher Maddie Cornwell has struck out 27 batters in 29 innings to help lead the Vinton-Shellsburg softball team to a 6-2 record. Burroughs has held opponents to a .169 batting average and has an ERA of just .32.  See complete individual VS stats HERE.

Viking alumni, coaches excited about rematch at CPU

Logan Merchant gives the VS alumni offiense some directions about plays during practice. 501 wins: Vikings honor Coach Struve for milestone, then split with Raiders

The Vinton-Shellsburg baseball fans honored coach Jim Struve (who also played high school b baseball as a Viking) for his 500th win as a coach on Monday evening. Coach Struve reached that milestone two weeks ago, when the Vikings scored consecutive sweeps of East Marshall and Independence. The celebration presentation was delayed a week because of rain that postponed last week's scheduled contests.
