Shelly Syx

Shelly Syx, 59, died Thursday, June 18, 2020, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids after a brief illness. Shelly was born Oct. 7, 1960, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Clarence "Nick" Jr. and Sharon (Dicken) Long. She graduated in 1979 from Washington High School in Vinton, Iowa. Shelly is survived by her children, Derrick Syx of Atkins, Jessie Syx of Atkins and Christine Parra of Cedar Rapids; a granddaughter, Josie; a brother, Scott (Kathy) Long of Las Vegas, Nev.

Cynthia “Cyndee” Louise Garbers

Cynthia “Cyndee” Louise Garbers, 67, of Festus, Missouri  died June 19, 2020, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City. Mrs. Garbers was a nurses’ aide for many years. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, scratch-off Lottery tickets and spending time with her family and friends. Born April 19, 1953, in Vinton, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Carolyn Ruth (Powers) and William Garbers Sr.

George A. Geater

George A. Geater, 77, died Sunday, June 21, 2020, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s.Private funeral services will be held at Wesley United MethodistChurch in Vinton with Pastor John Howerton officiating.  Visitation will be held Thursday, June 25 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton.

Joan Faye Exline

Joan Faye Exline, 76, of Norway, Iowa, passed on Sunday, June 21, 2020, at the farm surrounded by her family.  Joan was born April 20, 1944, in Walford, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Dora Faye Bartosh. She married Glenn Exline on Oct. 22, 1962, in Walford. They had two sons, Donald and Rodney. Joan worked at Cryovac for 30 years, where she made many friends.

Jane Frances Hanzelka

Jane Frances Hanzelka, 89, of Atkins, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2020, at the Dennis & Donna Hospice House of Mercy after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at St. Jude's Catholic Church at a later date, when family and friends can gather together and celebrate Jane's life. Jane was born to Joseph and Mary Upah in Victor, Iowa, on June 12, 1930.

SHARON K. NEMECEK

Sharon K. Nemecek, 75, of Shellsburg, Iowa, died Thursday, June 18, 2020. A visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Center Point, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2020, at the funeral home. Private family burial will take place at McBroom Cemetery in Shellsburg.

Charles E. “Chuck” Peterson

Charles E. “Chuck” Peterson, 72, died Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester after a courageous battle with leukemia.Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church in Vinton with Father Jim Brokman as Celebrant.  Visitation will be Friday, June 19, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton.

Edna Ellen Olmsted Heitmann

Edna Ellen Olmsted Heitmann was born August 3, 1921 in the farm home of her grandparents, George and Anna Wickersheim Koether in the little community of Giard in northeast Iowa.  She was the daughter of David Neill and Charlotte (Koether) Olmsted. She was raised in the home of her parents in Giard.               She went to school in Giard #6 through eighth grade.

Gloria Jean Pugh

Gloria Jean Pugh, age 74, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at her home in Newhall surrounded by her family. A small private service will be held Thursday June 18th, 2020 with family and close friends.   Gloria was born on June 11, 1946, in Ft. Dodge, IA, the daughter of Bernard and Florence (Leiss) Espinoza.

Kenny R. Lawrence

Kenny R. Lawrence, 89, of Belle Plaine, IA passed away Sunday, June 14, 2020 at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, IA.Kenny was born January 11, 1931 to Monroe and Bertha in Belle Plaine, IA.Following school, Kenny entered the U.S. Navy. Upon returning he worked as a meter reader for utility companies around the Belle Plaine area.He is survived by his daughters, Bonnie Harrison and Gina Lawrence-Sokol; sister, Betty Lawrence.
