Junior Cheerleaders perform at last home game

A highlight of the football season for young girls in the Vinton area is the Junior Cheerleading event. Sponsored by the Parks and Rec Department, the youngsters learn from high school cheerleaders then join them during Friday's game. 

Children, see, smell the development of plants

Butterflies and bees fulfill their role in nature at the outdoor classroom at Tilford. Benton County naturalists Aaron Askelson and Karen Phelps taught Tilford Elementary students how plants grow and even how the seeds smell during a presentation in the outdoor classroom behind Tilford Elementary last week. While the students were learning about nature in the pavilion, butterflies and bees were busy in the nearby garden, helping pollinate flowers.

VS Band earns Division 1 rating at IHSMA Festival

The Vinton-Shellsburg Marching Band continued its string of Division 1 ratings at the Iowa High School Music Association Marching Band Festival in Cedar Rapids. Performing at Kingston Stadium, the band earned its eighth straight Division 1 rating. Under first year director Nick Waymire, the band and flag corps performed a routine based on "Pop Goes the Evil.

Red Cedar trap shooters already have 47 signed up for spring season

Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters coach Jeff Tilson said that already, 47 students have signed up for the school's trap shooting team. That's 17 more than the 30 who competed last year. While a second trap house is under construction and will be ready in the spring when the shooting season begins, the additional shooters could mean a 50 percent increase in the ammunition costs for the program.

VSHS National Honor Society Induction set for Oct. 21

The NHS induction ceremony is Monday, October 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.  There will be a reception following the ceremony in the commons.  We are inducting 33 new members, three seniors and 30 juniors.  We currently have 27 senior members of NHS so this will make our total 60 members in Vinton-Shellsburg's chapter of National Honor Society.

$450,000 Clinic Expansion Underway

Clinic staff, VGH leadership team, and Mayor Van Horne, IA (October 15, 2013). The Van Horne Family Clinic is undergoing a total renovation and expansion to better serve the healthcare needs for residents of Van Horne and surrounding communities. The Virginia Gay Hospital, with family medical clinics in Atkins, Urbana, Van Horne and Vinton, saw the need for substantial facility updates at the Van Horne Family Medical Clinic.

Haunted Trail brings fun and fright; Haunted Hayride set at Wildcat Bluff

Some frights from the Haunted Trail; Haunted Hayride next at Wildcat Bluff this weekend. "Lots of fun, lots of people scared." That's how Benton County Conservation Director Matt Purdy described the Haunted Trail at Rodgers part last weekend. This week a similar event takes place at Wildcat Bluff. The 3rd Wildcat Bluff Recreation Area Haunted Hayrack ride will take place on October 18th and 19th. Cost is $4 for children 12 and under and $8 for adults.

Special Olympics bowlers attempt to qualify for State event

Marissa Yessak, Sage Holmes, Dani Koopman & Zach Kremer join Coach Zimmerman for opening exercises. The Vinton-Shellsburg Union (VSU) Special Olympics athletes met at Berry's Lanes Saturday to attempt to qualify for the State Special Olympics bowling event. This year, the VSU was allowed to bowl at Berry's Lanes; in previous years they had to go to Cedar Rapids.  Steve Berry offered the club a discount; fund-raisers held throughout the year help cover the cost of such events, said coach Tammy Zimmerman.

VFD Fire Prevention Breakfast tradition continues

Hayden Phippen waits for mom Danielle to cut her pancakes and the VFD breakfast on Sunday. For as long as anyone in the Vinton area can remember, the Vinton Fire Department has held a pancake breakfast during Fire Prevention Week.  "We did it all 38 years I was on the fire department," said former fireman Bob LaGrange, who retired from the VFD 20 years ago.  Hundreds of people lined up for pancakes, eggs, etc.

Police continue investigating theft reports

The Vinton Police Department is investigating reports of the theft of money and other items from unlocked cars in several Vinton neighborhoods over the past few days. Several Vinton residents have shared Facebook posts, offering information about items stolen from them. Chief Jeff Tilson reminds residents to lock all doors.  Anyone with information about a theft should call the police at 472-2321.
