'Best day EVER!' Kindergarten, 1st grade students ride fire trucks

Kindergarten students wave to the camera before their ride begins. As they traveled along 4th Street, halfway through their trip from Tilford Elementary to downtown Vinton and back, one of the kindergarten boys expressed his approval of that day's activities with three words. "Best day EVER!"  For more years -- decades, even -- than anyone can count, local firefighters have been giving elementary students some great days to look forward to each October.

Boy Scouts ask residents to help with annual food drive

Help us fill the shelves. Earlier this week Pack 47 and Troop 47 of the Boy Scouts of America was out placing bags on the doors of Vinton residents for their annual food drive. This coming Saturday, Oct.12th starting at 9am they will be back around to pick up the bags that hopefully you put can goods in for the local food bank. Please place the filled bags outside your door by 9am Saturday morning.

Take Charge: VS students attend conference on substance abuse

High school students from Belle Plaine and Vinton-Shellsburg attended the ASAC Take Charge Conference this year in Cedar Rapids. All of the students that attended were part of advocacy groups that exist in their high schools.   The students learned about leading their advocacy groups, myths and facts of different drugs, changing the community they live in, and how to present information to their city councils, just to name a few things.

Second graders visit fire station

Firefighter Luke Henkle shows second graders what a firemen looks like when he enters a room. Fire Prevention Week in Vinton continues today, as second graders visited the fire station Firefighters showed the students their uniforms and equipment, as well as many of the trucks.  A new tradition that began last year is allowing the students to learn how to activate the nozzle of the firefighter's hose. The youngsters eagerly lined up for their opportunity; the photos show how much they enjoyed it.

Colorado expert delivers warning about marijuana at Vinton meeting

During the last month, 25 percent of Denver high school students have gotten in a car driven by someone who was using marijuana obtained through that state's medical marijuana program. That was just one of the statistics that Dr. Christian Thurstone shared during a "Truth About Marijuana" event Tuesday evening at Tilford Elementary.

Benton County Sheriff's Report, September

Benton County Sheriff Randall Forsyth reports that deputies answered 312 calls for service and investigated 15 accidents.  Deputies attempted to serve 144 civil papers and issued 84 traffic citations and 118 traffic warnings. There were 43 arrests/juvenile referrals with 48 charges being filed in September 2013. (31) were simple misdemeanors, (10) were indictable misdemeanors, and (7) were felony charges.

Fire Prevention Week: Firefighters begin school visits

Preschoolers received these fire hats today. Vinton-Shellsburg elementary students and even pre-schoolers are learning basic fire safety this week.  The Vinton Fire Department is working with local schools to teach children about smoke alarms, "stop, drop and roll," exit plans, calling 911 and how to react if there is a fire in their home.  Visits began on Tuesday morning, as firefighters visited preschool classrooms.

Benton Community bus involved in accident; minor injuries reported

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a two vehicle collision which happened at the intersection of 21st Ave and 71st St one mile south of Van Horne at 8:30 a.m. Betty Nolan, age 81, from rural Van Horne, was driving a 2010 Ford Edge westbound on 71st St and had stopped at the stop sign at 21st Ave. Nolan waited for a northbound car to go through the intersection then pulled out onto 21st Ave into the path of a southbound school bus.
