Veteran's Day Monday, did you remember to send in that picture?

We have had a great response this year to the plea for Veteran names and information. On Monday we will put together a special tribute to our veterans. Our list is not complete, it never is.  We rely soley on the input of the community and family members.  If you have a relative that served and is also associated with Benton County feel free to send their information in.

Ryan Davis named Iowa Assistant Principal of the Year

Ryan Davis of VHSH has been named Iowa Assistant Principal of the Year. Vinton-Shellsburg Principal Ryan Davis has been chosen Assistant Principal of the Year by School Administrators of Iowa. Mr. Davis was nominated and then was selected from the nominees in the Grant Wood Area to represent the AEA at the state level. Yesterday, he was notified that he won the statewide distinction.  Mr. Davis has been a part of the district for six years.

Celebration Park nearly complete

With most major work done, Celebration Park welcomes those coming to Vinton from the north. The lights have been turned on; the first set of trees planted. Workers have been finishing the pavilion/rest room building.  And recently, the beginning of the grass seeding process took place leaving Celebration Park covered with green.  A dedication ceremony will take place next year, after the winter weather has ended. 

Visiting the Pumpkin Farm is more than just a field trip

Students learned of the need to cover pumpkins if it freezes during the tour of Sanders' Farm. Submitted by Deb Hesson- Tiny Vike’s Preschool Coordinator There is no denying that students at Tiny Vike’s Preschool enjoyed their trip to Bonnie’s Pumpkin Farm!  However, the students most likely had no idea of how much they learned before, during and after their visit! Our goal at Tiny Vike’s is to teach children how to learn so they can be life-long learners.

County Election Results: Wiley wins supervisor race

Todd Wiley Former Vinton-Shellsburg School Board member Todd Wiley will become a Benton County Supervisor next Tuesday. In Tuesday's special county-wide election, Wiley, the Republican candidate, received 1,407 votes (48 percent). Democrat Shelley Parbs received 1,013 votes (33 percent), and independent Ed Sass had 523 (18 percent). The results remain unofficial until canvassed by the Benton County Board of Supervisors during their meeting next Tuesday morning.

Voyagers fund-raising can drive continues; next drop-off Saturday

The VSHS Voyager Dance Team will be continuing their refundable can/bottle collection. Every 2nd Saturday of the month, from 9:00-10:00am, you can drop off your cans/bottles at  611 W. 5th. St. In Vinton, or contact Head Coach Melanie Davis @ 521-6653 to arrange a pick up. Thanks for your support!!!

Tree of Lights - A Giving Tradition continues at VGH

Tree of Lights Generosity is the heart of our community. For generations families, friends, neighbors and businesses have continued a long tradition of giving to Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics. Celebrating our 21st year, the annual Tree of Lights fundraising campaign helps Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinics, a not-for-profit organization, purchase crucial medical instruments to better serve our community.

Big bang theories: The pryo-science that guides the geniuses of Boomtown

Jerry Dixon offered a college-level chemical discussion to IPA members Saturday. To the fireworks fans who gather each August for Boomtown, the members of the Iowa Pyrotechnic Association may seem like guys who simply like to blow things up. But anyone who walked into the IPA meeting on Saturday afternoon in Chuck Yedlik's machine shed would understand just how scientific and complicated this hobby really is. IPA member Jerry Dixon led a class on the chemicals that he and others use to make fireworks.

Veterans, Scouts retire worn flags

Scouts and veterans retired unserviceable flags Friday evening. The American Legion Post 57 veterans, with the assistance of Troop 47 Scouts, performed a flag retirement ceremony Friday night outside the Legion Hall. Dozens of unserviceable flags were retired by burning. The Scouts and vets saluted the flag before Rex Shepherd explained the meaning of the flag, and that ceremony.  “A Flag may be a flimsy bit of printed gauze, or a beautiful banner of finest silk.
