Did you know this about the American Legion: Eagle Scout of the Year Award?

A Boy Scout that has achieved the rank of Eagle Scouts may be nominated for the American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year Award by submitting a nomination form to the Legion Department in which they reside. Each Department will select one nomination to forward to National for consideration for the Eagle Scout of the Year Award. The American Legion Department of Iowa awards scholarships annually to its top three finalists, first place $1000, second place $750 and third place $500.

Benton County Sherriff's Report, Constance Rose Runde

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible trespasser around 9:15 a.m. Oct 14, 2014 in the area of 29th Avenue and 65th Street 3 miles SW of Shellsburg. Upon arrival deputies discovered a vehicle about 300 feet south of 65th street next to a cornfield and in a grass waterway. There was no one around the vehicle at the time.

Kay Shepherd begins enjoying retirement after 30+ years in health care

Gathered with her family at Golf Right on a recent Friday evening, Kay Shepherd said she does not really have any specific plans for retirement. As she answered that question, the door opened and in walked three of her grandchildren. Now that Kay has retired after eight years as the Assistant Nurse Director at Virginia Gay Hospital Nursing and Rehab Center, she and her husband Harold will, indeed, be able to spend more time with their children and grandchildren.

Missing CR woman's body found south of Shellsburg; investigation continues

Searchers found the body of a missing CR woman Tuesday after her car was seen south of Shellsburg. While searching a creek southwest of Shellsburg Tuesday afternoon, the Palo Fire Department’s Water Recovery Unit found the body of an 81-year-old Cedar Rapids woman who had been reported missing earlier this week. The victim has been identified as Constance Runde, 81. The Cedar Rapids Police Department had issued an "Operation Quickfind" alert after Runde's family reported her missing.

Missing person: Authorities look for driver of abandoned vehicle near Shellsburg

A water search team found the body of the driver after this abandoned car was seen near Shellsburg. A minivan parked more than 100 yards from the gravel of 65th Street south of Shellsburg has led to a massive search for a missing woman. Volunteer firefighters and First Responders from most of Benton County's cities have joined the Benton County Sheriff's Department in searching for the driver, whose name has not yet been released. "It's a missing person case," said Sheriff Randy Forsyth.

From Old School to VS schools: Program brings local produce to local lunch rooms

Early in the school year, Vinton-Shellsburg students enjoyed something that is extremely rare for school lunches: Ears of sweet corn.  The students eagerly lined up for the treat from Old School Produce Co. and Mike Elwick, whose staff shucked all of the corn. The 94 dozen ears were quickly consumed.  The students loved it, said VS Food Service Director Karen Ackman.

VS school board OKs $200K more for field turf; to review bids in November

The Vinton-Shellsburg School District has taken two more steps toward becoming the next Iowa district to replace its grass football field with a multi-purpose field turf. During Monday's meeting, the VS School Board approved an appropriation of $200,000 from the FY 2015 PPEL funds, bringing the district's total financial commitment to $810,000.

NHS inducts new members, hears leadership advice from Judge Zimmer

The members of the Vinton-Shellsburg National Honor Society have grown up in a community that added many more unique attractions during the past 20 years -- projects that did not just happen, but are the result of leadership, Van Zimmer told the audience during the NHS induction ceremony Thursday. "Good things take leadership and civility," Zimmer, a 1965 Washington High School graduate, told the audience.
