VS families asked to participate in technology survey

By Kim Meyer, VS Technology Dept. We have made some significant changes in the technology opportunities we offer our students and staff. Although we have done a lot, we know there are still more we can do to improve our use and purchase of equipment. As we determine how to best allocate our resources (time and money), we are gathering input from students, parents and staff.

Benton County residents targeted by Sweepstakes scam

The  Benton County Sheriff’s office has received three reports of attempted scams in the Vinton area today. Calls are being received stating that they have placed second in the Publisher Clearing House Sweepstakes. They are requesting that the people wire money to them to cover the processing costs. The requests have ranged from $200.00 to $1000.

Area Substance Abuse Council offers update on variety of programs

At ASAC we are constantly working to reduce substance use and abuse in the community. In order to accomplish this task, prevention specialists are working with community members and professionals to address substance issues on many fronts. The following are a few highlights of the committees that have been formed to address substance use issues.

Poisonous gases suspected in rural county death

A suspicious vehicle was reported Sunday at the roadside park on highway 218 north of the 218 & 8 junction south of La Porte City in Benton County. Upon investigation it was determined that there may be hazardous chemicals in the vehicle. LaPorte City Fire and Ambulance were dispatched to the scene. Linn County Hazmat was subsequently contacted.

Banquet, auction help Ikes improve area's nature

Three hundred and sixty-one years after Englishman Izaak Walton published his historic book, "The Compleat Angler," the American conservation club that bears his name continues to make a difference in environmental causes.  And the local Izaak Walton members are doing their part to help improve Benton County's nature.

FFA Fruit Sales now starting

From October 17th- November 5th, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter will be having their annual fruit sales! The chapter sells different types of fruits, cheeses, sausages, and nuts. The fruit sale delivery dates, this year, will be on December 15th and 16th. This year, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter’s goal it to have every member sell at least $500, with a chapter goal of $40,000.

Greenhand Night offers intro to FFA opportunities

FFA members participate in unique team exercises during Greenhand Night. On October 13th, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter held their second annual Local Greenhand Night. Local Greenhand Night is to welcome Greenhands- or first year FFA members- into FFA and to show them what FFA is all about! On Monday, the chapter had 13 members show up for Local Greenhand Night and four parents joined them. The members went to different sessions taught by the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA officer team and participated in different mixers.

Benton Co. Volunteers Donate Pillows

Comfort Pillows The Benton County Volunteer Program visited the Vinton Family Medical Clinic to donate nearly two dozen specially made pillows for breast cancer survivors. Charmaine Wickwire, executive director of the Benton County Volunteer Program met with clinic director, Melissa Macku to give the “cancer comfort pillows.” The pillows are beneficial and comforting to cancer patients after surgery, but also helps the 20+ volunteers who give their time to help make them, and “it’s healing for everybody,” said Wickwire.

Sanders end 40 years of Pumpkin Farm, but tradition will continue

Bonnie Sanders and granddaughter Chloe welcomed visitors on Wednesday. Forty years after harvesting her first pumpkins, Bonnie Sanders is starting to say good-bye to the hundreds of local families who have made visiting the Sanders Pumpkin Farm an annual tradition. This will be the last year that Dwight and Bonnie raise countless varieties of vegetables and flowers, and welcome classrooms of children to their farm.
