By Sue Gates and Mike Timmermans (VS School Board members and former principals)

Regardless of where or when we attended school as a child, each of us remembers a special principal from those days. Our memories of this special principal differ but in our eyes they made a positive impact on our future.

October is designated National Principal Recognition month. Vinton-Shellsburg is fortunate to have five highly qualified principals who truly care about our students and their learning. Their days are full from early morning where they are busy outlining ways they will assist students and staff until late at night following evening events where they are seen encouraging students to do their best.

The role of a principal has changed dramatically over the last 15 to 20 years. It has changed from being primarily a disciplinarian to one of being primarily an instructional leader. Principals today spend a great deal of time with the teaching/learning process. In addition to being instructional leaders in their buildings they are motivators of students and staff, liaison to parents and the community, CFO’s of their building, counselors, cheerleaders, and much more.

Thank you to Mr. Kingsbury, Mr. Kasper, Mrs. Peterson, Mr. Davis, and Mr. Murray as they strive to always do what’s best to help their students learn. In fact, this might be the perfect opportunity to let these people know how much they are appreciated.
