'Garrison's Haunted' returns; fund-raiser for Emergency Services

Garrison's Haunted will provide frights on four October nights.   ‘Garrison’s Haunted’ is back for a night of frights and ready to rain more terror on those who dare to cross its threshold than ever before. The annual event is a production by the Garrison Firefighters, First Responders, Auxiliary members and a squad of volunteers. The event will be held the evenings of October 17, 18, 24 and 25 from 7 pm to 11 pm.

BDG, USDA discuss variety of housing options

Benton Development Group hosted a housing meeting with the USDA Rural Development on Wednesday, October 8, 2014. The USDA Rural Development works to deliver quality programs that will increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for Iowans living in rural communities. The agency’s direct and guaranteed rural credit programs help families find affordable housing, assist businesses to create economic opportunities, and allow communities to build or improve essential infrastructure and facilities.

Fire truck rides wrap up week of fun safety lessons

Local elementary students learn these important lessons and others each year in a way that they look forward to.   Fire Prevention Week is among the most-anticipated for local elementary students has come to an end, leaving memories of fire truck rides, visits to fire stations, and a keener understanding of how to prevent and survive a fire.

Benton County Sheriff's report/arrest log, September 2014

Benton County Sheriff Randall Forsyth reports that deputies answered 312 calls for service and investigated 15 accidents. Deputies attempted to serve 176 civil papers and issued 65 traffic citations and 175 traffic warnings. There were 22 arrests/juvenile referrals with 29 charges being filed in September 2014. (3) were felony charges, (10) were simple misdemeanors, and (16) were indictable misdemeanors.

Bling a Bra contest continues; will raise funds for local organizations

The Bling a Bra contest continues at Nature's Corner; vote by donating to local organizations. The Bling a Bra contest continues to include more entries at Nature's Corner in Vinton. The idea of Dawn Rall, the daughter of owner Cindy Elwick, the contest now includes entries featuring clowns, pearls of wisdom and even the famous yellow Minions from the "Despicable Me" movie. There are now 24 entries, and the contest will continue.

Fire station visit offers children variety of safety lessons, experience

Addyson Chvala tries on a firefighter's gloves & helmet Tuesday during a visit to the fire station. Skyler Brinker spent part of her 8th birthday at the Vinton Fire Station, where she learned a little about how to operate the nozzle of a fire hose.  She and dozens of Tilford students continued the observation of Fire Prevention Week with the annual tour of the fire station on Tuesday. Several firefighters helped with the event. Josh McGowan gave some safety lessons, telling the children why not to return inside a burning house to save a pet.

RTI at VS Middle School: What it means for students

(In the picture, students work on an art project; the photographer was part of an RTI class, too. What is RTI? Have you heard students talking about RTI? What in the world are they talking about? Well, wonder no more. Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School began looking into the national initiative last year as a way to personalize learning for all students. RTI stands for “Response to Intervention” and one benefit of the initiative is to help students who are struggling.

'Someone's dad coming to help': Firefighters share safety lessons at Tilford

Dan McKenna helps son Wes put on his firefighter's coat during classroom visits Tuesday. It can be scary, Vinton firefighter Dan Albert told a class of students at Tilford Elementary, to see a firefighter in full gear, with a helmet and breathing apparatus.  But, he said, that firefighter is simply "someone's dad coming to help you." Often the firemen who participate in Fire Prevention Week activities are indeed the fathers of a Tilford student.
