Undefeated Union, Burnside set new school records in win over Vikings

Union linemen celebrate Wes Burnside's record-setting season by putting him on their shoulders. For the first time in school history, the Union football team is undefeated, 9-0 at the end of the regular season.  And for the first time in school history, a Knight running back has carried the ball for more than 2,000 yards.  The Knights celebrated both milestones after defeating the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings, 9-0 Friday in La Porte City.

Vikings season ends with loss at Union, 29-14

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings traveled to Union Friday night with a 4-4 record and needing a win to extend their season into the playoffs.  Coach Farley and his team went to La Porte with a simple strategy: Keep the ball, use up lots of clock and keep the ball out of the hands of the Union offense and record-setting running back Wes Burnside.

6th grade Viking Gold team finishes 5-1 in Metro League

The sixth grade Viking Gold team is 10-2 over two years, playing larger teams. A touchdown short: Loss to Sabers puts Vikings post-season in doubt

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings came into Friday's game vs. DeWitt Central in third place in the Class 3A District 5 football standings, needing a win to secure a spot in the playoffs that begin Oct. 27. But the Sabers took three 14-point leads and were able to hold off the Vikings in the final quarter, defeating V-S by a score of 36-27 The Sabers took an early lead, but a 56-yard run run by Logan Williams followed by a 26-yard pass from Lincoln Riffey to John Lippman gave the Vikings a 15-14 edge.

Vikings in third place in District 5; could guarantee playoff spot tonight

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings are in third place in Class 3A, District 5, with two weeks left on the regular-season schedule. A win by the Vikings tonight virtually assures them of spot in the post-season action that begins Wednesday, Oct. 27. Undefeated District 5 leaders Union and Marion play tonight, with the winner likely to be the District Champion.

V-S volleyball team leads camp for younger players

Many young players learned the fundamentals during Volleyball Camp. The members of the Vinton-Shellsburg volleyball team and Coach Stephanie Francois- Miller held volleyball camp this week for the younger players. The girls ran through a variety of drills, learning the fundamentals of the game.

V-S Special Olympians qualify seven for State in bowling debut

Morrigan Hubbard, Shelby Arp, and Dani Koopman of the V-S Special Olympics are all smiles.   The Vinton-Shellsburg Special Olympics bowling team came home with 7 state qualifiers in their debut showing at the East Central Iowa Regional Special Olympics tournament.   Nearly 200 athletes and volunteers filled the Westdale Bowling Center in Cedar Rapids on Monday morning.   Team members Shelby Arp, Morrigan Hubbard, Danielle Koopman, Beau Vinton, Zach Kramer, Robert Hurst, and Jimmy Wolfe took home first place ribbons.

Turning Laps for the Community; how Benton Co. Speedway helped in 2010

1st Autism Awareness Night and bicycle races took place August 29 at the Benton County Speedway The 2010 Benton County Speedway racing season wrapped up with another successful year for both racers and community organizations. Over $4,000 was raised for non-profit organizations during Sunday night racing events, including over $400 for the Vinton Area Dollars for Scholars, almost $600 for the Family Nurturing Council and over $2,200 for Iowa’s Bravest.

Playoff picture improves: Vikings win 52-17 at CPU

Logan Williams crosses the goal line to give Vikings a 20-10 lead at CPU. The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings improved their playoff chances on Friday moving up in the District 5 standings after their biggest victory of the year. They won 52-17, at Center Point-Urbana, spoiling Homecoming for CPU. The victory moved the Vikings into fourth place in the District with two weeks left in the schedule. The top four teams advance to the playoffs.
