Vinton firefighter Josh Geiger only gets out his golf clubs and heads for the fareways and greens once a year.

Last Friday, his annual golf game brought a “one in a million” shot.

On Friday, Sept. 10, at the Iowa Firefighters Association Convention Golf Tournament

Alerted to Josh’s success by fellow firefighter Dan Albert, Vinton Today asked Josh to tell us what happened.

“On Hole 2, a par 3, I hit a hole in one," says Josh. "The shot was about 180 yards, with the pin at the back of the green. It just happened to be the hole where they were offering a brand new golf cart as a prize for a hole in one.”

Swinging into a headwind over water, Josh watched as his ball went into the hole on the fly, breaking the top ring of the cup and leaving a deep ball mark in the green. Two officials witnessed the shot.

“After confirming the ball was in fact in the hole the celebration began,” said Josh. “I never thought I'd ever get a hole in one, so I didn't get hole-in-one insurance, which meant a round on me at the club house.”

“All in all,” says Josh, “I still came out ahead.”

The cart company who donated the hole-in-one prize, NB Golf Cars of Des Moines, is putting Josh’s cart together for him, and it is to be delivered to his house this week. The golf cart he will get is very similar to the demo model in the picture.

Josh’s wife Ariane, was at the Convention, where she joined her husband in celebrating this rare accomplishment.

Does the ace and the new prize mean that Josh may become more than a once-a-year golfer?

"Now that I have a new cart, I might have to use it more often," he says.
