'85 grad Jim Womochil gives up opportunity at ISU to lead VS football team

Jim Womochil has been working for Paul Rhoads at Iowa State University since December. But the 1985 Vinton graduate and former Viking and UNI Panther football player is giving up the college coaching opportunity to return to his hometown. Womochil will replace Patrick Farley as the VS head football coach, and will also teach social studies, history and psychology at VSHS.

VSHS Soccer: Vikings get first team win

Will Hancock (11) high-fives Jake Milroy after Milroy scored. The Vinton-Shellsburg High School boys soccer team, one of the first-year teams in Iowa this year, is celebrating its first win. The Vikings defeated Independence Tuesday evening in Vinton. The Vikings built a 5-0 lead then held on to win, 6-3.  See the team's Quick Stats page HERE. The VS girls soccer team celebrated its first win of the season last week.

Former Vikette Shelby Beyer places in three events for UNI

4 x 100 handoff: VS alum Shelby Beyer receives the baton from a teammate. UNI freshman and 2011 VS graduate Shelby Beyer enjoyed success throughout her freshman year on the UNI track team. Shelby's mom, Dawn, reports that Shelby's last track meet was at the Messersmith Invitational at UNI last Friday. Her 4x100 relay team came in 3rd, she came in 7th in the 100m and 9th in the 200m. "Her freshman year went great and flew by so fast!" said Dawn.

WaMaC girls golf: Vikettes sixth, Natalie Ketchen earns honorable mention

The V-S Girls Golf team finished in sixth place in the WAMAC conference Super Meet at Gardner Golf Course (par 72), on May 7. Flanagan among winners at Benton County Speedway, May 6

WaMaC Super Meet: Vikings finish 9th, Vikettes 14th

Cheyenne Barnes runs the 100 M dash during the WaMaC meet in Vinton. The first-ever coed WaMaC Super conference track meet took place in Vinton on Thursday evening. Both boys and girls teams competed, with more than 800 athletes signed up for track and field events. "Overall the first WAMAC supermeet was a success," said VS boys coach Aric Chvala. "O don't think you will find a conference meet anywhere in the state that has the level of competition that the WAMAC has, year in and year out.

Vikettes earn some career bests, defeat Benton at Wildcat, 186-196

  Benton Community's girls golf team played its best round of the season, but the Vinton-Shellsburg girls were 10 shots better than that Thursday, as the Vikettes defeated the Bobcats, 186-196. Dirt Tour event set for May 8 at BC Speedway; top prize set at $1250

  VINTON  – The winner of next Tuesday’s JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour opener at Benton County Speedway will have 250 more reasons to celebrate. The first place share for the May 8 IMCA Modified main event at Vinton has been increased by $250, to $1,250.  Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods race for $400 to win, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks for $300 and Mach-1 Sport Compacts for $100.

Vikette golfers take second at WaMaC West meet

VSMS 7th grade boys team takes second in Little Viking track meet

The Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School 7th grade boys track team took secnd place in the Little Viking Invitational in Vinton on Tuesday. The 8th grade team finished in sixth place.
