On to State! Vikings earn trip to Des Moines with 65-56 win over Crestwood

Next stop: Des Moines! Max Kearns begins the celebration as the Vikings complete their win. The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings will play Harlan at 3:45 p.m. next Tuesday, March 5, in the opening round of the Iowa High School State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines. The Vikings earned the berth with a 65-56 Sub-State win over Crestwood at the McLeod Center on the UNI campus Monday night. Grant Sagan again led the Vikings in scoring witth 24.

Supporting Red Cedar Shooters: Whitetails donate to VSHS Trap Shooting Team

Whitetails Board members Lenny Engelking and Jared Vogeler present $1,000 to Sara & Kyle Jorgensen. The Prairie Creek Sports Club/Whitetails Unlimited Chapter of Benton County donated $1000 to the Vinton Shellsburg High School Trap Team.  Presenting the check were Whitetails Unlimited Board Members Lenny Engelking and Jared Vogeler. Accepting the donation are High School Trap team athletes Sara and Kyle Jorgensen.   Also the Prairie Creek Sports Club/Whitetails Unlimited Chapter of Benton County donated $2500.

Substate preview: High-scoring Vikings face one of Iowa's best defenses

  One of the best defenses in Class 3A is preparing to face the highest-scoring offense in tonight’s Sub-State 3 match-up. While the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings are leading Class 3A in points scored (1,608), the Crestwood Cadets are among the best defenses in the state. The Vikings average 69.9 points per game; the Crestwood defense has held its opponents to an average of 47.

Vikings return to Sub-State; to play Crestwood Monday at McLeod Center

On Monday, the Vinton-Shellsburg basketball team will travel to the place where they last lost a high school basketball game, hoping to get to the State Tournament for the second time in Vinton-Shellsburg history, and the first time since 1996. The Vikings struggled early Friday night in their District final in the Benton Community gym, as Union poured in seven 3-pointers in the first half, and kept the basketball game close throughout three quarters.

Vinton Softball-Baseball Corporation to hold registration this Wednesday

Vinton Softball Baseball Corporation will hold registration for 7U (1st Grade) summer baseball this upcoming Wednesday at the Vinton Fire Department.  Registration will run from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm - Player fee is $50 plus uniform cost.  The 7U team will participate in the PST League out of Cedar Rapids and will have approximately 12-15 home and away games this season.

Vikings District basketball game rescheduled, moved

Due to weather, the V-S Boys District Basketball game vs. Union has been rescheduled to Friday, the 22nd at 7 pm at Benton Community High School, Van Horne, please note change of location.

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa – Independence Motor Speedway registration forms for the 2013 season have been mailed. Vikings rout Mustangs; to face Union in District Championship

Max Griffith shoots a 3; he scored 10 Monday. For the first six minutes, the Independence Mustangs played a close Class 3A District 6 game with the VInton-Shellsburg Vikings. Although spotting the VIkings a 5-point lead, the Mustangs kept the game close, and trailed just 13-7, with a little more than two minutes left in the first quarter. Then the Viking domination began. Two quick steals led to Chase Overton layups just seconds apart, giving the Vikings a 17-7 lead, and causing the Mustang coach to call time out.

Vikings advance, 74-32

Weather permitting, the Vinton-Shellsburg VIkings will play for the Class 3A District 6 Basketball Championship against Union on Thursday at Linn-Mar High School in Marion. The Vikings defeated Independence 74-32. Union defeated Benton Community, 50-46.

Vikings begin road to Des Moines leading many team, individual stats

Going into the post-season, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings lead all Class 3A basketball teams in points scored and point differential. The top-ranked Vikings, the only unbeaten team in Class 3A, has scored 1,478 points and has won its 21 games by an average of 19.8 points. An interesting stat about the Vikings, who host Independence Monday night in the District opener, is how their scoring quarter-by-quarter has been nearly perfectly consistent.
