Lack of snow turns sledding party into bowling party for Willing Workers

On Wednesday December 30,  28 members of the North Eden Willing Workers 4H Club spent a fun filled afternoon bowling at Berry lanes in Vinton before they head back to school next week.  The 4H club was originally going to go sledding but with the lack of snow they went to plan "B."  Fun was had by all.

34 bowlers compete in 10th Annual Coots 8/9 Pin Tourney

Last Saturday, Berry's Lanes hosted the 10th Annual 8/9 Pin Tournament sponsored by Coots Materials. This tournament was held for all youth bowlers that participate in the local leagues at Berry's Lanes. This year we had 34 youths joined in on the competition. Each bowler bowled three games and the individual bowling with the highest score won a trophy.

Local Family Doubles winners advance to State event in Marshalltown

Family Double event participants competed at Berry's Lanes in Vinton on Dec. 5-6. Results have been finalized with many teams advancing to the state competition.  This year's state competition will be held Jan. 10-11 at Totem Bowl in Marshalltown.   Berry's Lanes sent many area bowlers down to Lancer Lanes to compete against many other district bowlers.

Viking swimmers set personal best times at Grinnell

On Saturday the Vinton-Shellsburg swimmers travelled to Grinnell to participate in the Tiger Invitational.  Despite finishing sixth in the seven team field it was a great day across the board as the Vikings turned in their strongest single-meet performance in the past couple of years.  Eight ranked Linn-Mar won the meet in dominating fashion, beating second place Des Moines East by nearly 200 points.

Vikes crown four champs, win team title at Monticello wrestling tournament

Nick Hyland, Michael Neal, Steve Henry and Carter Weeks were tourney champs; VS claimed team title. Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers won the Dan Guilford Tournament in Monticello on Dec. 6. Carter Weeks, Nick Hyland, Michael Neal, and Stevie Henry were individual champions. The Vikings are coached by James Locke, Hank Bratten, and Phillip Miller. Love of coaching brings retired superintendent Healy to V-S BB program

Vikette BB Coach Mike Healy works with seniors Brea Burroughs and Chelsea Mier on a 1-on-1 drill. Mike Healy says that in his retirement, he is only going to do “things that I love.” And among the things he loves most is something he did when he began his career in education more than 40 years ago – coaching basketball. Healy retired from his position as superintendent of the Bellevue school district at the end of the 2013-14 school year.

Prep Basketball: Vikings begin season tonight; girls look for first win

The Vinton-Shellsburg High School basketball teams are both in action tonight, as the Vikings host Dyersville Beckman in their season opener. The Vikettes travel to Beckman tonight then host West Delaware, which is led by former Vikette Coach Harold Shepherd, on Friday.  Junior Maci Griffith led the Vikettes in their season opener last week, scoring 19 in the 57-50 loss to Anamosa last week.

Girls win VSHS bowling opener; boys fall just 14 pins short

Cole Garwood led the varsity boys with a 371 while Taylor Berry's 335 led the VS girls varsity bowling team in its opening competition last week. The varsity girls won; the boys lost a close contest. Coach's Summary:  This is the first match of our season and I am very proud of these teams.  As you know, Berry's Lanes has gone through some changes and replaced the lanes recently, and our teams have only had one full practice on them.

Did you know this about the American Legion: Junior Shooting Sports Program

The American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program encourages marksmanship and gun safety education for children ages 12 to 18. The American Legion of Iowa Junior Shooting Sports teams are given the opportunity to participate in TWO tournament level matches: A Department shoulder-to-shoulder match, and the National postal match. Both competitions follow the National Standard Three-Position Air Rifle rules.
