Summer Reading Program participants learn history of Marionettes

Richard Elsenpeter, the manipulator, puts on a Marionettes show Monday.       Puppet shows are a fairly common event at public libraries, but the puppet show that took place in Vinton on Monday was a rare look at some of the earliest puppets of history.      Richard Elsenpeter brought a collection of his hand-made Marionettes to Vinton as part of the Summer Reading Program entertainment schedule.

Auxiliary members, Gold Star families continue to serve country

Auxiliary members march in the Memorial Day Parade, en route to the river for the Naval tribute.        There are many groups of Americans who, although they did not go to war, have significantly sacrificed for their country in times of war and peace, and continue to serve America in a variety of ways.     Auxiliary groups such as those serving in the American Legion, VFW, AMVETS and other organizations are made up of the mothers, wives, daughters or sisters of veterans.

A night of hope for cancer survivors, caregivers, family and friends

The VGH team poses for photo.      Lori Ferguson stood on a stage and said something that five and a half years ago she probably never would have imagined saying.       She said she would not, if given the choice, choose to live without cancer.      "I would not have traded having cancer because you find out what you're made of," Ferguson told the audience at the Benton County Relay for Life Friday evening.

Ryan Davis finds first of 20 Party in the Park Medallions

Ryan Davis found the first of many Party in the Park Medallions Friday morning.      The first medallion out of twenty was found on Friday, June 3rd by Ryan Davis also known as Sherlock Davis.  The medallion was found near the Bandshell in Riverside Park which was significant of the festival being moved to the park for the first time.       Remember each day for twenty straight days there will be a new medallion hidden around the clues given out each week through all the media outlets and you can also get the weekly clues at vprdzone.

Residents reminded to take care of weeds; work to begin on C Ave next week

The City of Vinton is spraying weeds in the downtown area on the sidewalks and around the trees. Property owners are responsible for weeds between the building and sidewalk. Please help get the downtown looking great for Party in the Park! Work will begin next week on C Avenue between West 5th Street and West 6th Street. The work should only last one week, weather permitting.

Party in the Park-20 Days of Medallion hunts start today

  The Vinton Parks and Recreation Department will be starting the Medallion Hunt, once again for the 20th Anniversary Party in the Park.  The Medallion Hunt will begin June 3, 2011 and end June 22, 2011.   Keep in mind the two guys that are hiding the medallions are a little strange at times and stretch things quite a bit and their first names are Jeff & Nathan.

Elsenpeter Marionettes coming to Vinton Monday for summer reading program

Elsenpeter Marionette puppets will appear in Vinton Monday, June 6,at the Skate Center.      The Vinton Public Library Summer Reading Program is under way, and the first big public event of the summer comes to Vinton on Monday, June 6th.      The Illinois-based Elsenpeter Marionettes puppet show team will have a variety of puppets during a show at the Vinton Skate Center at 10:30 a.m.        Children's Librarian Sharon Rhinehart said the event will give children a chance to see the Marionette style puppets.

Bopp seeks to form Camera Club, invites shutterbugs to join him June 11

     After 30 years of being away from his hobby of photography, Tony Bopp is hoping to find others who can teach him more about the topic.      For that reason, he is hoping to start an informal photography club in Vinton. Bopp plans to be at the Fifth Street Koffee Haus at 10 a.m.on Saturday, June 11, and welcomes other camera lovers to join him.
