Good start for Beth's Bakery

Beth Snell, right, runs Beth's Bakery with the help of her daughter, April Vaske.     The vacant store (the former home of Coppler's jewelry store) gave Beth Snell the opportunity to expand her cake decorating hobby into a business.     Now, Beth's Bakery offers donuts and other goodies six days per week. Beth, along with co-owner Howie Wilds and her daughter, April Vaske, run the business.

Cell Phones: Inmates have full access, but calls are monitored, recorded

VGH honors employees for milestones

15-year honorees included Nancy Good and Nancy Farmer.     While Carol Salger set a record by being the first Virginia Gay Hospital employee to work there 50 years, several other hospital employees were honored for reaching milestones measured in decades.     The hospital held its annual awards banquet for employees, something administrator Mike Riege said has been happening each year since before he arrived 20 years ago.

Flood insurance may cost county $25,000 per year for LEC

Workers installed the hand rails at the new LEC Friday morning.       Workers drilled holes in the new concrete on Friday, preparing to install the hand rails leading up the steps to the new Law Enforcement Center.        Across the street, inside the courthouse the Benton County Supervisors worked to get a handle on the insurance costs -- particularly flood insurance -- for the new building.

CNA Carol Salger becomes first to reach half-century milestone at VGH

Resident Franny Porter gives Carol Salger a hug & kiss after learning she received a 50-year honor.     Carol Salger had just been laid off from her job at the Wilson meat packing plant in Cedar Rapids.     Virginia Gay Hospital was dealing with the Asian flu and needed more nurses' aides, ASAP.     Salger walked into the hospital for an interview with then-administrator George Garwood.

Hills Bank and Trust Company presents check to Vinton-Shellsburg Schools

Kelly Couchman Hills Bank and Trust Company and Mary Jo Hainstock, Superintendent   Kelly Couchman from Hills Bank and Trust Company recently presented a check to Mary Jo Hainstock, Superintendent, on behalf of the Vinton-Shellsburg Schools.    Through a program called Classroom Cash, customers of Hills Bank who use a debit card are able to designate an area school to receive a donation.  There is no cost to the customers and it is a way to support local community schools.

City council tables ordinance on Parks and Rec hiring authority

       The Vinton City Council tabled an ordinance that would have transferred the hiring authority of the Vinton Parks and Recreation Board to the city coordinator and city council during a special meeting Thursday evening.     Currently the parks board has full authority to hire a director and other employees; the new ordinance would have required that the board recommend a new hire to the city coordinator, who makes the hiring decision, subject to council approval.

Parks and Rec Board discussion to continue tonight at Vinton council meeting

      The Vinton City Council will continue its discussion about proposed changes for the Vinton Parks and Recreation Board during a special meeting tonight.     The absence of some council members from last week's regular city council meeting compelled Mayor John Watson to delay the discussion; the council agreed to hold a special meeting to finish business left over from last week's agenda.
