Cow kills woman north of Urbana

    A routine farm outing for an Urbana grandmother and her young grandson turned deadly when a cow attacked the woman, who later died of her injuries.      The victim is Jean (Jeannie) Fee, 60, of rural Urbana. On Saturday afteroon, Fee went to the pasture with her grandson, to feed the cows, when one of the animals attacked her.

Kelby Robb, Karley Kenney to compete in State Fair Cowgirl Queen contest

Kelby Robb & Karley Kenney will go to the Iowa State Fair to compete in the Cowgirl Queen Contest.      Two Brandon Saddle Club members, Kelby Robb and Karley Kenney, will represent their club at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines this year in the Cowgirl Queen Contest.        The girls were judged in a horsemanship class (a pattern chosen by the judge which consists of turns, backing and pivots at a walk, trot or lope) and were required to answer judges questions.

Bar Y Pyros to make sure Party in the Park ends with a big bang

         For the past 20 years, Vinton has hosted the Party in the Park family celebration at Riverside Park.  And since 2005, the Bar Y Pyros, led by local farmer Chuck Yedlik have put on an awesome fireworks show to cap off the weekend long festival.       This year, in honor of the 20th anniversary of Party in the Park, Yedlik and the Pyros promise a show the likes of which have never been seen in Vinton before.

Casas bring magic act to Vinton, part of Summer Reading Program entertaiment

The 'bird magician' David Casas performed for Summer Reading Program kids Friday.     Iowa magician David Casas wowed more than 250 people with his sleight-of-hand bird and card tricks, as well as his magic humor during a performance at the Vinton Skate Center Friday morning. Casas appeared as part of the Vinton Public LIbrary's Summer Reading Program entertainment.     The next big event is ventriloquist Kyle Frank, on Monday June 27.

INS, Keystone Comm. donate to Garrison Emergency Services Foundation

The Garrison Emergency Services Foundation received a total of $1,000 in donations.        Iowa Network Services, Inc. has made a $500 contribution to the Garrison Emergency Services Foundation through its Charity Grant Program.  The contribution was matched by Keystone Farmers Coop Telephone Company.  INS created the Charity Grant Program to increase its service and support to the communities it serves and help bring INS closer to its customers.

Moving days: Temporary 911 radio room sold, removed

Deputies watch the removal of the temporary 911 communications building.      The biggest single thing to move as part of the relocation of the Benton County Sheriff's Office back to the new LEC was loaded on a trailer yesterday.     The temporary 911 radio equipment room, which was placed near the old 911 tower after the Flood of 2008, was sold to Lattice Communications for $4,500. The company offered that bid, the highest of two submitted to the county in May.
