VS 5th grader Madyson Rule plans summer trip to England and France

Madyson Rule poses with lamps that will help raise funds for her trip to Europe in June of 2012.        Her dad said he was sweating it out during his interview, but Madyson Rule of Vinton was confident during hers; confident that she would be selected for the People to People Ambassador trip to France and England this summer.     She was.     Next summer, Madyson, the daughter of Brendan and Lisa Rule of Vinton, will see the place where her favorite movie was made, get  a chance to eat snails and frog legs, and perhaps even meet the Queen of England.

VSMS Lego League team prepares for December contests

Kayla Schneider, Logan Murray and Caitlyn Martin look for just the right Legos for the robot.      First Lego league members Caitln Martin and Logan Murray and volunteer Kayla Schneider look for just the right piece as they design their robots last week in Mrs. Turner's room.       The teams at Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School will progam and design Lego robots to perform a variety functions on a course with a Food Factor theme.

'Stuff the Bus' helps area families with Christmas gifts

Randy Lee discusses the toy give-away with Lanette Parker of Harvest Ministries and Bill Ervin.      The weather has been too warm for thinking about Christmas, said LaNette Parker of the Harvest Valley Ministry. But soon, she said, area families will feel the chill of winter and see the December snow and remember it's time to sign up for the Harvest Valley Christmas gift program.       One of the first public events to raise awareness of the Christmas program is the annual WMT "Stuff the Bus" campaign.

Christmas lights: Sanders, Koopmans decorating again this year

The Sanders family will decorate their farm again this year, on Thanksgiving Day.    The weather forecast is promising for those who want to spend Thanksgiving decorating for Christmas, says Bonnie Sanders.       "Sixty degrees! We can get a lot done," said Bonnie on Wednesday, as she discussed the Sanders family Thanksgiving tradition (aided by friends) of setting up the large holiday light display at their farm on 63rd Street south of Vinton.

Thanksgiving Dinner: Community celebration at 1st Baptist brings many together

More than 40 people helped cook and serve the annual Thanksgiving at First Baptist Church.        The Thanksgiving tradition at First Baptist Church in Vinton continued on Thursday, as more than 40 people volunteered to cook a complete Thanksgiving meal.       The entire community was invited, and hundreds came again this year. The menu included turkey and all of the trimmings as well as homemade desserts.

Vinton farmer injured in fatal accident near Waterloo

       A Vinton farmer sustained some injuries in an accident that killed another driver north of Waterloo on Wednesday afternoon.      Garth Beatty, 70, was heading south on Highway 63, driving a 1999 Ford F-250 pickup truck that was pulling a trailer with a tractor on the trailer, when a 2008 Toyota Corolla pulled into his path at the intersection of Highway 63 and Black Hawk County Road C-57.

Rozella Rouse, Showcase's first weekly winner!

Due to circumstances beyond our control...we are now moving Wednesday evening...

      Ok, THIS time we mean it, well we meant it last time, but stuff happens, and then the right thing doesn't happen as planned :)        As it looks now, we are scheduled to be down Wednesday afternoon through Thanksgiving!       Enjoy the time with family and enjoy that turkey!      For those of you who missed this the first round.

VSMS Honor Roll

The Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School staff has sent Vinton Today a list of names left off of the Honor Roll last week. Those students include:   6th graders Colton Evans, Jake Gram, Ethan Horak, Cole Overton and Connie Upmeyer made the “A” honor roll.  Colton had a 4.0 gpa.  Mitchell Bos, Clinton Hill, Chris Rilling, Hailey Stephens and Janeal Kearns made the “B” honor roll.
