Remembering July 11, 2011....

Area residents will spend time reflecting on the storm of July 11, 2011,  & how it united neighbors. For the residents of the Vinton, Garrison, Urbana and Dysart areas, July 11 is a date that will live in the memories of most. On that date two years ago, a storm that include sustained winsd of 130+ mph winds caused millions of dollars in property damage and destroyed thousands of trees. Many area residents are still repairing damaged caused by the storm.

More volunteers needed for river clean-up Aug. 3

The Vinton area Cedar River R.A.T.S. invite everyone to come out and be a part of the sixth annual Cedar River Clean Up project on Saturday, August 3, 2013. This annual event is family friendly and free to everyone. The R.A.T.S. are still seeking volunteers with canoes, kayaks and boats to help clean the banks of our Cedar, starting at the Mt.

Meet the 2013 Benton County Fair Queen candidates

 Taylor Jo Arens Seven candidates are trying to earn the title of Benton County Fair Queen during the Fair later this month, as well as representing the county at the Iowa State Fair Queen contest. The seven are: Taylor Jo Arens Taylor is the daughter of Dan and the late Dena Arens of Belle Plaine.  She has two younger brothers Tyler and Nathan.  Currently, Taylor attends Belle Plaine High School where she will be a senior this fall.

Iowa DNR seeks Benton County photos for 'Happy Healthy Outdoors' contest

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is seeking entries for a photo contest to promote Healthy and Happy Outdoors The DNR is asking Iowans to send in photos of how they’re enjoying Iowa’s outdoors. The DNR will  use the best photo from each county to create a statewide photo quilt for the Iowa State Fair (and each county winner gets a subscription to Iowa Outdoors).

Sanders resigns supervisor seat; officials to discuss vacancy Thursday

Now that Benton County Supervisor Jason Sanders has officially resigned, the process of replacing him will begin. First elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2002, Sanders has also been a youth pastor at Oak Grove Church since that year. He and his family have decided to move to Ogden, Utah, to help begin a new church there. See the Sanders announcement on their family blog HERE.

Students, teachers preparing 500 VSHS laptops for 1:1 roll-out

VSHS Byte Squad volunteer Grace Milroy holds the laptop she will use during its software download. Members of the Byte Squad, students at Vinton-Shellsburg High School who volunteer to help with computer-related programs, are helping V-S IT team members Kristi Storey and Kim Meyer prepare the 500 Airbook laptop computers for use by students. The 500 brand new computers are part of the VSHS 1:1 computer program, which begins this year. Students are helping Meyer and Storey download all of the software from the "Casper" server onto each computer.

Two years after storm, Historical Society members pleased with Horridge progress

Two years after the July 11, 2011, wind storm significantly damaged the Horridge House (and destroyed the one-room school house before it could be moved to the area near the depot and also caused damage to the depot and the Ray House), Benton County Historical Society members say the storm has led to many good things. They are optimistic about the group's plans for the future of Vinton's oldest landmarks.

Benton among Iowa counties affected by intestinal illness cyclosporiasis

The Iowa Department of Public Health, CDC and local public health agencies are investigating an outbreak of an intestinal illness caused by Cyclospora. This is a rare parasite protozoa that is spread by swallowing water or food that has been contaminated with infected human feces. Direct person-to-person spread is unlikely to occur as the protozoa that are found in the feces of sick people are not infectious until days to weeks after excretion).

Hogan Memorial celebrates commitment to family, love of racing

For Scott and Jolyne Hogan of Vinton, dirt track racing has always been and will always be about family. “Scott's parents gave him his start in racing,” said Jolyne. “Without them we would have never made it to the track our first night out.” This Sunday night, July 14, the annual Hogan Memorial will honor Scott’s parents, the late Dick and Janet Hogan.
