Race fans bring donations for Friends of the Shelter

Race fans brought supplies for Friends of the Shelter during Fuzzy Friends Night at the Benton County Speedway on Sunday, June 30, 2013. The Frank sisters were on hand to help accept donations on behalf of Friends of the Shelter.

Party in Pink: 600 participants and many volunteers help raise $8,500

Cancer survivors present a $8,500 check to VGH Foundation Director Mike Timmermans. The members of the Breast Cancer Survivors were hoping for 200 participants when they began planning Friday evening's Party in Pink event. But by the time the last person had signed up, more than 600 had joined the walk and 5K run event. All of these people, along with many sponsors, donors and volunteers, helped to raise $8,500 for the Gifts of Hope fund, which helps pay for mammography service and radiology expenses for women who cannot afford them.

Party in the Park ends with biggest fireworks show in event history

Party in the Park 2013 ended Saturday night with the events biggest fireworks display ever. With hundreds of people sitting close enough to feel and smell the fireworks, and thousands more watching from around Vinton, the 2013 Party in the Park ended Saturday night with a reminder of the contribution the parade Grand Marshals have made to the event for the past several years. Chuck and Marilyn Yedlik were honored as the Grand Marshals in the parade; Chuck and his Bar-Y Pyros have been an important part of Party in the Park for several years, with Bar-Y donating a large part of the show each year.

Fireworks, music and fun: Day 2 of Party in the Park

Party in the Park 2013 moved to Riverside Park on Friday, where the High Road Band and Upstage provided the music, Bar-Y Pyros provided a preview of Saturday's grand finale, and a variety of games and activities took place.  See more photos of this year's events HERE.

Extension programs to address new trends in dairy feeding

The Jan. 1 USDA cattle inventory report showed only 89.3 million cattle and calves in the U.S., down 1.6% from 2012, and the smallest since 1952. That resulted in only 34.2 million calves born in 2012 available for feeding and market in 2013 and 2014, almost 3% less than a year ago. To compensate for fewer calves available to feed, cattlemen are feeding cattle to heavier weights to attempt to maintain beef production, and are utilizing growth-promoting technologies such as beta-agonists to increase the red meat production potential.

Sheriff's Office plans traffic enforcement program

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office will participate in the July 1st – July 7th sTEP traffic enforcement wave. This project is part of a grant from the Governors Traffic Safety Bureau. Sheriff Randy Forsyth received a 2012-2013 grant that provides $3,900.00 for radars and Alco-Sensors; $500.00 educational materials; and $18,400.00 for overtime patrol for a total of $22,800.

Party in the Park: Stories and photos from Thursday

Children ride from the FSB parking lot to the courthouse during the Kiddie Parade. The Grand Medallion has been found. Last year's Fair Queen, along with some of the 2013 Fair Queen candidates and the Benton County 4-H Council, were among the volunteers who helped with games.  Hundreds lined up for free hot dogs and chips before riding bikes, scooters, wagons and other small vehicles in the Kiddie Parade. The Schmidt Family Band and Lizzie Moen sang.

Ben Hyland represents ECI REC in DC youth event

VS student Ben Hyland represented the ECI REC during the DC Youth Trip. Ben Hyland of Vinton recently participated in the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour program in Washington, D.C., sponsored by East-Central Iowa Rural Electric Cooperative. He spent six days in Washington, D.C., with 33 peers from Iowa. Each year in June, an action-filled week provides high school students opportunities to learn first-hand what it is like to be involved in politics, community service and today’s pressing issues in the energy industry.

Rebuilding of Miss Underestimated will keep pilot busy several weeks

John Stiegelmeyer has begun repairing his plane, following a runway deer incident that damaged it. John Stiegelmeyer said spending the summer repairing his plane is not the way he had planned or wanted to spend it, but his love of flying and his plane are motivating him to do the work. He will be fixing the frame, replacing damaged fuel lines and replacing the left wing and fuel tank. Steigelmeyer said he had briefly contemplated retirement after the accident on Saturday, June 8, when his RV-7A hit one of three deer crossing the runway as he landed his plane at the Vinton airport.
