Willow Huber crowned 2013 Fair Queen
Iowa State Fair Queen Abrah Meyer visited Vinton to help crown the 2013 Benton County Fair Queen. After the seven candidates lined up on stage during the traditional Thursday evening ceremony, Willow Huber was named Queen.
The 2013 Princess is Kristin Lowe.
The candidates named Sara Petrzelka as Miss Congeniality; runners-up were Taylor Jo Arensand Dorothy Zaugg. Best of Show: Flowers, garden and project winners selected
Doug Wendel used a walnut tree from the farm where he was born and raised in rural Watkins to make a dresser.
That project was named one of the Best of Show winners in the Benton County Fair Open Show on Thursday.
The winning items will be on display at the Fairgrounds.
While judges finished their work of evaluating flowers, garden produce, sewing, photography and more, hundreds prepared their animals for this week's events. Future of City of Shellsburg: Visioning team invites residents to Aug. 8 meeting

Members of the Visioning Steering Committee as well as the Design Committee will be visiting with residents from 4-8 p.m.Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Shellsburg Legion Hall. Free ice cream treats will be served.
VSHS cheerleaders learn new routines during cheer camp
Twenty-five Vinton-Shellsburg High School cheerleaders along with coach Randi Walker and former VS cheerleader Emma Horst are spending the week with three instructors from the Cheerleading Stunt Academy during Cheerleading Camp.
The girls are learning new cheers, as well as receiving lessons in safety and fundamentals.
Fair begins! Hundreds bring projects for judges to evaluate
Hundreds of 4-H and Cloverbud members and their parents lined up in the 4-H Building at the Benton County Fair Wednesday.
Each year the fair begins with the judging of hundreds of projects in a variety of categories, from baking to sewing to photography to wood- and metal-working. Almost every summer, Kelly Steffen would to go to a history teachers’ workshop and see for herself some unique, important places and monuments.
At every one of these places Mrs. Steffen would say, “I wish my students could see this.”

It is that time again the Benton County Fair open class Flower Show! Everyone received a fair book containing the open class departments in the mail the first week in July.. Hope you saved it for reference! The show is open to all growers residing in BENTON COUNTY ONLY.
Weather delays baseball; Vikings to play at Van Horne Tuesday evening
Photographers, thanks to a thunderstorm at sunset, had a variety of photo opportunities Monday night: Rainbows, sunset clouds, lightning, and more.
Mother nature offered the opportunity to take photos of just about everything, but baseball.
While skies to the south were bright blue as Viking fans arrived at Van Horne for the District final between Vinton-Shellsburg and Benton Community, dark clouds gathered to the north before making their way south, bringing wind, rain lightning. eRegistration window is now OPEN for V-S!

Every year, Vinton Today encounters a vehicle in the Vinton Cruise that we have not seen before. Some, like Fluffy, the giant 1965 Chevy truck we first saw last year, caught our attention the first year their owners bring them to the Vinton event. Last year, we also met Shaun Swiser and his Camaro, which we went looking for after Shaun commented on one of our pre-event stories how glad he was to be able to come -- he was in Afghaniistan in 2011.
