On October 13th, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter held their second annual Local Greenhand Night. Local Greenhand Night is to welcome Greenhands- or first year FFA members- into FFA and to show them what FFA is all about!
On Monday, the chapter had 13 members show up for Local Greenhand Night and four parents joined them. The members went to different sessions taught by the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA officer team and participated in different mixers. There was four different sessions; Careers in Agriculture, CDE’s, Personality Test, and Opportunities in FFA.
The Careers in Agriculture session was to show the members that there isn’t only one job in agriculture- farming- but that there are so many opportunities out there in agriculture!
The CDE’s session was all about Career Development Events. In FFA there are multiple CDE’s that FFA members participate in and the Officers wanted to show the members that the CDE’s are fun and that they will give them new skills. The CDE’s give members opportunities that will help them in the future and maybe open their eyes to what career they want to go into.
The Personality Test was a fun test to see what members are like. This test was the Color Test that the officers did at COLT. Members took the test and each of them got colors that describe their personalities.
The Opportunities in FFA session was to get the members educated in random facts in FFA, as in when it started, who wrote the Creed, and other information. The information that was used is similar to what the Greenhand Quiz is like at the different Leadership Conventions.
These different sessions helped the members understand FFA a little more and get to know one each other a little better. All and all, Local Greenhand Night went great and everyone enjoyed it!
