VFW Bass Tournament yields 16 pounder

2nd Place – (L-R) Dale Henry, Dan Bliss, Dean Guedes The Vinton VFW Post 8884 hosted the 2nd Annual VFW Bass Tournament at Harper’s Ferry on Sunday, 7 August 2022. Blast-Off was at 6 am in the rain with 10 boats participating. Weigh-in was at 2 pm by Gary Smart and Hunter Blaylock of the Cedar Rapids Bass Masters Club.Dan Bliss won the Big Fish award with his 4.44 lb. bass. Cameron Ingle and Dawson Davidson took 1st Place with 16.

New Things for Shellsburg City Park

The Shellsburg Area Community Group (SACG) obtained a grant from the Benton County Community Foundation for some upgrades to the city park. This spring a “funnel ball” game was installed behind the gazebo and a smaller version of a basket game was placed in the mulched playground area. The funnel ball game at the school playground had been very popular, but the balls tended to get stuck so when researching the games, we made sure to get one that would accommodate a basketball.

New Kiwanis Park Shelter named the Keith Ervin Shelter

Keith Ervin Shelter named to honor long time Kiwanian and two time president of the club Matt Boggess, Director of the Vinton Parks and Recreation, spoke to those gathered on Sunday to dedicate the new shelter at Kiwanis park. He said, "I was sitting in my office and thinking about someone who has had a long legacy serving with the Kiwanis for over 60 years, and as President of the club twice, and we decided rather than to rededicate the shelter, to rename this shelter the Keith Ervin Shelter.

Annabelle Newton Benton County Fair Queen 1st Runner-Up at the Iowa State Fair

Annabelle Newton, Benton County Fair Queen becomes 1st Runner-Up at the Iowa State Fair Annabelle Newton became the 1st Runner-Up at the Iowa State Fair Queen Pageant on Saturday night. The 1st Runner Up will serve if for some reason the 2022 Iowa State Fair Queen, Mary Ann Fox of Mitchell County is unable to serve. "Wow what a night! Annabelle is the first one from Benton County in the 21 years I have coordinated the Benton County Fair Queen Contest to place at the top!" said Angie Becker.

Accident kills one injures another

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 11, 2022, a 2011 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Marion Schminke, 90 of Shellsburg pulled away from the stop sign heading south on 30th Ave. and into the path Nathan Harrelson, 21 of Vinton. Harrelson was traveling west on 61st St. Lane (known as County Home Road) in a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro.The pickup was struck by the Camero and after the impact both vehicles came to rest in the southwest ditch landing on their top.

E.C.H.O. and Iowa Abundant Life Ministries help those in need in Vinton

Victoria Fink shares with the local Kiwanis the services offered by E.C.H.O. and Abundant Life Ministries Victoria Fink is no stranger to serving her community. As a former pastor's wife, she has had experience finding and meeting the needs of those around her. She spoke on Tuesday to the local Kiwanis group about two such organizations that help residents in Vinton. First, she talked about E.C.H.O. a nonprofit (located next to LaGrange Pharmacy)  service organization whose mission is to help families moving with basic household furniture or other basic household needs.

Belle Plaine, Iowa Student Author Wins in Bushel of Stories Contest

By Kelly FossTwo Iowa students – a 5th grader from Farley and a 6th grader from Belle Plaine – have been named the winners of the second annual Bushel of Stories agriculture writing contest. The contest for Iowa students in grades 3-8 was organized by the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation (IALF).  Elementary and middle school students were challenged to write a story book about agriculture or food.
