Evansdale Murder Investigation Continues 10 Years Later

Lyric-Cook Morrissey (left) Elizabeth Collins (right) It was 10 years ago on July 13 that cousins 10-year-old Lyric Cook-Morrissey and 8-year-old Elizabeth Collins went out for a bike ride in Evansdale, Iowa, and never returned home to their families. Five months later on December 5, 2012, hunters in the Seven Bridges Wildlife Area of rural Bremer County came across two bodies, which were eventually identified as Elizabeth and Lyric — found approximately 25 miles from the Black Hawk County location where they originally went missing.

Rita Guenther Shares Experiences made possible by Vinton Residents

Rita Guenther (pictured with Dave and Sue Gates) shared her Russian experiences made possible because of Vinton residents It was probably just a trip to visit mom, but when mom is part of the Kiwanis club you get drafted to share your experiences with the group. So that's what Rita Guenther who now works at The National Academies in Washington D.C. did. Vinton Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Distributing Meth

            A man who distributed methamphetamine was sentenced today to more than six years in federal prison.             Chad Allen Havens, age 55, from Vinton, Iowa, received the prison term after a March 23, 2022 guilty plea to two counts of distributing methamphetamine.

Area Children decorated Downtown Vinton with Their Artistry

Last Saturday, July 2nd, Vinton Unlimited sponsored a chalk drawing event that was held in downtown Vinton.  Several area children participated in the activity creating pictures on the sidewalk. Some of the drawings were just for fun, some were serious and some were silly drawings.Participants in the activity were provided with chalk, as well as freeze pops and popcorn.

12 years old Entrepreneur looks into the future, and he's got plans

Cole Birker's original chair, considered for state fair, received an award of excellence in judging. Sometimes the Benton County Fair is just a time to show off your talent. Other times it's a stepping stone to becoming an entrepreneur. For 12-year-old Cole Birker, he hopes to make a little profit from his creation. Cole has goals and he's figured out that if he can create income, he can reach those goals much faster. Birker received a ton of positive feedback on a chair that he build and entered into the fair.

Vandalism hits area Churches

At the end of May, a couple of area churches were hit with minor vandalism on a Saturday night. Just in time for parishioners to arrive and see it on Sunday morning. As one of the pastors said, "I can't argue with any of it. Love IS love. Women's rights are human rights. But I can't figure out where the 'Climate change is real' comes in, we've never said anything about that.

Happy 4th of July from a Young Artist

As part of Vinton Unlimited's Chalk it Up event on Saturday, young Emry Welper, a local nine-year-old, thought that the sidewalk in front of LaGrange Pharmacy in downtown Vinton. Saturday morning he got out the chalk and added a bit of a patriotic touch to the sidewalk. He drew a flag and a soldier saluting the flag along with the words "God Bless America" for his art selection EJ is the son of Cory and Katelyn Welper.
