Benton County adds Century and Heritage Farms

351 Century and Heritage Farm Families Honored at Iowa State Fair. The program celebrates farms in the same family for 100 and 150 years, respectively.Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, Iowa Farm Bureau Federation President Brent Johnson and Vice President Joe Heinrich honored 351 Iowa farm families with Century or Heritage Farm designations at the Iowa State Fair today.

New Library Hours as of September 19

VINTON-SHELLSBURG MIDDLE SCHOOL RECEIVES NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL AWARD

School Board President Tom Burke presents Middle School Principal Shelly Petersen with a bouquet in congratulations. U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona today recognized the Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School as one of 5 schools in Iowa receiving a National Blue Ribbon Schools award for 2022. The recognition is based on a school's overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Secretary Cardona made the announcement during his Road to Success Back to School bus tour.

Vinton Popcorn Company offers Halloween Themed Popcorn Bags

The Vinton Popcorn Company will be selling a special Halloween themed bag of popcorn for the upcoming holiday. Each Halloween-themed bag will contain caramel popcorn, M&Ms, candy corn, and a spider ring for kids of all ages to enjoy! Each bag is $2 and available for local residents only. Order through October 14th with pickup on October 27th and 28th at 3:30 p.

Help needed this Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church Food Pantry

Wesley United Methodist Church Food Pantry will be this Sat. Sept 17th from 10-11. Please bring bags and boxes to carry your food home. Our address is 516 2nd Ave. We are the Church next to the Library.If you have extra produce from your garden we would appreciate any donations. Old School Produce brings in the harvest

AmeriCorps and the Vinton-Shellsburg High School Freshman AG class, have lent their hands in the harvesting of the produce from Old School Produce. It is estimated that to date, the gardens have produced around 1,800 lbs of carrots with more to go. Last week found the tomatoes coming on strong and the onions husked. Waiting to be harvested next are the Acorn, Delecata and Butternut squash.

Waterloo Couples Counselor Cited for inappropriate text messages to client

A Cedar Falls couples counselor has been sanctioned by the state for making lewd or improper remarks to one of his clients.According to the Iowa Board of Behavioral Science, Cory Wumkes, who holds a mental health counselor’s license in Iowa, was providing couples counseling when he made “inappropriate verbal comments” and sent inappropriate text messages to one of the clients.

Two Vehicle Accident south of Vinton

Tuesday found the Vinton Fire Department and other emergency services responding to two accidents throughout the day. The second was on Highway 218, south of Vinton at the intersection of 63rd St. and 24th Ave. The accident involved two pickups that collided at the intersection. No further information is available at this time.

L.O.S.T. Loved Ones Safe & Together available through the Vinton PD

L.O.S.T. Loved Ones Safe & Together, is a program to assist in identifying and locating community members who have been separated from their families or caretakers. Individuals who suffer from Alzheimer's Disease, Autism or other medical conditions which involve memory loss, confusion, or are unable to communicate, may wander away from their homes.
