Vinton Lions help to replace tattered flags
This last Memorial Day, while taking down the many flags at the area cemeteries, the Legion members found 20-40 flags that were faded, frayed or torn and that needed to be disposed of. The Vinton Lions Club purchased 10 flags to help replace some of the retired flags. In March, students of the Vinton-Shellsburg Agriculture I classes were challenged to select a country around the world and a problem that was creating hunger problems within that country; and create solutions to combat food insecurity. After writing a paper to express their conclusions, they were given the option to submit their paper to the Iowa Youth Institute which took place in April. Center Point Historical Society News – Log Cabin FestivalJenny Barnett, of the African American Museum of Iowa, gave a talk on The Underground Railroad to about 50 guests at the Center Point Historical Society’s annual Log Cabin Festival, Sunday, Aug. 28.The pleasantly non-political presentation featured Iowa’s part of the story. Jenny pointed out, that though Iowa was always anti-slavery, there were enslaved people here. Vinton was booming once again for Boomtown 2022
Another successful weekend is in the books for Boomfest/Boomtown 2022! The Kiwanis started off with the annual Bring the Noise 5K race covering a section of Vinton. While that was happening, Boomfest was taking shape in the downtown area. Many businesses and vendors set up their wares to display for residents and visitors alike. Originally, Boomtown started out as an extension of the fall meeting of the Iowa Pyrotechnic Association and club shoot. Support V-S Post Prom and look good while you do it!

Rain or shine!All of the fun will kick off for Boomtown at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 27 at the Benton County Fairgrounds. Entrance to the fairgrounds is $5 per person walk/in. Dwight and Bonnie Sanders Inducted Posthumously into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame
Dwight and Bonnie Sanders, formerly of Benton County, were inducted into the 2022 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, August 21. Ninety-eight counties selected 133 inductees for outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. Inductees, or their surviving family members, were presented a certificate by the Iowa 4-H Foundation President, Julie McGonegle, and State 4-H Program Leader, Debbie Nistler. The Iowa State Fair was held in Des Moines August 11th-21st. New foods, games, and exhibiting opportunities attracted many to attend; including some of the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA members. Throughout the fair, members showed off their SAE projects, lent a helping hand whenever possible, and overall had a good time while they were at it. Many accomplishments were awarded to them as a result. Bruce places 1st in the lamb 2022 Iowa Farm Bureau Cookout Contest
After the wood fired flames extinguished along the Iowa State Fair’s Grand Concourse, Steve Heaberlin of Warren County was crowned the 2022 Iowa Farm Bureau ‘Cookout Champion’ of the 58th annual cookout contest at the Iowa State Fair. Heaberlin’s coffee-rubbed smoked beef ribs were voted as the championship-winning dish among dozens of qualifiers from around the state at the Farm Bureau Day tradition.
Vinton-Shellburg 2022-23 School Year now in Session
As students arrived at Tilford Elementary for their first day of school, you wouldn't have known for most that they had been gone for the summer. Many picked up where they left off greeting each other and the teachers in the hall. Some looked a bit apprehensive but so did some of the parents. There were last minute payments being dropped off for lunches and last minute registrations.
