Severe Weather Spotter Training Seminar Thursday, March 27

On Thursday, March w7, 2025, the public is invited to a seminar that will last approximately 2 hours. All emergency services, law enforcement, school personnel, public works, Benton County EMA Spotters and anyone interested in learning about severe weather is encouraged to attend.The Quad Cities National Weather Service Forecast Office out of Davenport, Iowa will be conducting this training seminar in cooperation with Benton County EMA.

Whose DNA is it?

The company known as 23andMe have begun the process of filing bankruptcy. For those who don't know what this company does, it collects DNA. The DNA is then analyzed and it has been helpful for the users to find out what kinds of illnesses they and their families might be disposed to getting in the future. 23andMe is also used to find relatives through DNA matches.

Vinton Shellsburg Administrator/Director Reports

The Vinton-Shellsburg administrators reported on a variety of academic, extracurricular, and operational updates. At the high school, ACT testing faced technical difficulties but was successfully completed in small groups, 24 new members were inducted into NHS, and spring activities, including track, speech, and FFA competitions, are underway. Parent-teacher conference attendance was low, especially among upperclassmen, and student scheduling for 2025-26 is in progress.

Iowa House votes to increase penalties, training for open records, meetings laws

By Robin OpsahlThe Iowa House passed legislation Monday to increase training for local officials on open meetings and information laws and raising penalties for violations.It’s the second year the House has moved on this issue — a similar measure passed in 2024 and made it to the governor’s desk, but was ultimately vetoed after an amendment was attached at the last minute that public records advocates said was counterproductive.

Iowa Secretary of State’s audit of voter registration finds 277 noncitizens

Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate announced today that his office has completed additional audits of Iowa's voter registration lists and identified 277 confirmed noncitizens who have voted or are registered to vote. After gaining access to the federal SAVE (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements) program, the agency compared its data with the self-reported noncitizen data received from the Iowa Department of Transportation last fall.
