Iowa House passes bill raising penalties for showing obscene materials to minors

By Robin OpsahlThe Iowa House passed legislation Monday raising the penalties for the crime of exposing minors to obscene materials after changing the bill to lower charges for minors who expose their peers to such material.House File 306, approved unanimously, increases the charges for knowingly disseminating or exhibiting obscene materials to a minor.

Center Point-Urbana FFA Sends Three Events to the State!

Addyson Sweeney, Chapter Website On March 8th, the Center Point-Urbana FFA chapter competed at the District FFA Convention, hosted at the Waterloo Career Center. The chapter had a strong showing, with three events qualifying for the state competition!Leading the way was Caleigh Lewis in the FFA Creed Speaking contest, where she earned a first-place finish. Addyson Sweeney also secured a trip to state with her Chapter Website presentation, earning second place.

Iowa schools eligible for $1,000 match on local food purchases

By Cami KoonsThe Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship launched a $70,000 pilot program Monday to help schools purchase local meat, poultry, produce, dairy, eggs or honey through the Choose Iowa program. Schools are eligible for a dollar for dollar match up to $1,000 per building, which means up to $2,000, per participant will go to local food producers.

Secretary Naig Invites Applications for Century and Heritage Farm Recognition

Applications for recognition at 2025 Iowa State Fair will be accepted through June 1 Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig invites eligible Iowa farm owners to apply for Century or Heritage Farm recognition as part of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s (IDALS) Century and Heritage Farm Program. The program was created by the Department and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation to honor families who have owned their farms for 100 years and 150 years, respectively.

Georgia man charged in Check Cashing Scheme

As part of a check forging ring, Mikal McCarty of Georgia, was charged with 12 counts including 10 counts of forgery, one charge of Conspiracy to Commit Non-Forcible Felony, and Theft 1st Degree all Class D Felonies.McCarty along with at least five co-conspirators cashed or attempted to cash forged checks at banks. The group went to the following towns: Iowa City, Nichols, Lone Tree, Coralville, La Porte City, and Vinton.
