One CPU Student stabbed, one arrested at VSHS

October 10, 2022, at around 7:36 PM Vinton Police Officers were dispatched to the Vinton-Shellsburg High School for a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers observed one male student assisting another male student outside of the high school building. From witness statements Officers determined that a 16 Y/O male stabbed a 15 Y/O male with a knife after a verbal altercation in the high school commons area.

Shellsburg receives $10,000 grant as part of Empower Rural Iowa Grants

Gov. Reynolds announces more than $450K in Empower Rural Iowa Grants to Advance Innovative Rural Development Initiatives   DES MOINES – Governor Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Economic Development Authority announced today that a total of more than $450,000 in grants have been awarded through six Empower Rural Iowa Grant Programs. The grant awards will support rural initiatives spanning from child care and housing to workforce attraction and leadership development in more than 20 counties.

Crash kills two on UTV in Benton County

According to the Iowa State Patrol, an accident occurred on 61st St. Lane heading eastbound in the 2800 block in Benton County at about 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2022.A 2001 Dodge Ram belonging to Francis Baldrus of Jewell, Iowa pulled out to pass the 2013 Polaris Ranger UTV carrying William Geater 76, and Mary McElhinney 60, both of Vinton.

Clipper Corner continues Fundraising Tradition for Gifts of Hope

Each year, Clipper Corner holds a fundraising raffle in an effort to books donations for Gifts of Hope. Gifts of Hope  is a fund created to provide free mammograms and diagnostic services to those who need financial assistance to pay for a clinic visit, testing, co-pays, and diagnostic analysis of those tests to determine next steps, as well as Pap tests and/or pelvic exams.

This year, Rachel plans on being a leader within the chapter through her committee chair position. Rachel is easily recognizable in the chapter, and is known for being in State and National Band and always bringing life to the chapter.

Eastern Iowa Honor Flight announces flight to Washington DC

Flight #45 to include 90 veteransOn Tuesday, October 18, 2022, the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight will launch Flight #45. The mission of this non-profit organization is to provide veterans with a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to visit monuments and memorials built in honor of their service and sacrifice. Since the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight began operations in 2009, 44 flights have transported 3,968 veterans, along with their guardians to Washington, DC.

VS FFA Attends Agronomy 411

FFA members learning about corn and all of the aspects of a combine. By: Co-Reporter, Grace SchminkeOn Wednesday, September 14th the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter attended the FS Agronomy 411 event at the FS building in Vinton. Several other area FFA Chapters attended the event as well. Students rotated through eight educational stations covering assessing soil, water quality, commercial fertilizer products, Iowa Corn Biofuels, aerial applications, combines, and soybean cyst nematodes.

Tacoa Talley request for Change of Venue Denied

The attorney representing Tacoa Talley in the First Degree Murder charge of the Jodie Bevans, requested a change of venue on Monday. In the case of the State of Iowa vs. Talley, Tacoa, Judge Chad Kepros denied the request. Kepros said, "News reports which objectively and factually report the occurrence of the crime and the events surrounding the criminal proceedings do not give rise to the kind of inflammatory publicity which causes a substantial likelihood or prejudice in the minds of prospective jurors.
