VanWeelden to ride in "the longest and toughest horse race in the world"

Shelby Van Weelden shared her plans to ride in the Mongol Derby next fall Shelby Van Weelden of Coggon, and the daughter of Vinton resident Melody Snow was welcomed by the Vinton Kiwanis Club on Tuesday. Shelby is a firefighter in Cedar Rapids, but she came to speak about something completely different. She has plans to ride in the Annual Mongol Derby, in Outer Mongolia in August of 2024. The derby is a 621 miles horse race that lasts 10 days.

Boy Scouts to hold Can/Bottle Drive October 21

On Saturday, October 21, Boy Scout Troop 47 will be conducting another can/bottle drive. The event will be at the Farmer's Savings Bank parking lot starting at 8:00 a.m. and will run until 3:00 p.m.On Saturday, October 21 and Sunday October 22, Troop and Pack 47 will also be distributing door hangers at residences all over Vinton with instructions for donating to this year's Scouting for Food event.

VS Vikings visit Virginia Gay Nursing & Rehab

Friday, Oct. 13th did not bring bad luck to the residents and staff at Virginia Gay Nursing and rehab, matter of fact it brought us a great blessing, much fun and laughter. The members of the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings football team came to visit. Lisa Stien RN provided pizza, candy, and a beverage, we played Bingo and each player introduced themselves and told us what position they played.

Greenhands Get Fired Up

This year on October 6th at Waverly-Shell Rock, they welcomed all of the new Greenhand FFA members in each chapter. While at Waverly-Shell Rock on Friday, district and state officers led four interactive workshops for the FFA members.

Iowa State Patrol Investigates Social Media Threat at the Capitol in Des Moines

The Iowa State Patrol received information about a threat to the Iowa State Capitol building from the United States Capitol Police around 12:45 pm today. The threat was made via social media. The Department of Public Safety investigated and assessed the threat and determined it to be not credible. Out of an abundance of caution, the State Fire Marshal's Office and the Iowa State Patrol swept the building and located nothing of concern.

Students visit the Vinton Fire Department

Josh Geiger talks to students of Tilford Elementary about Fire Safety and how to respond when there is smoke in the room Dozens of Tilford students continued the observation of Fire Prevention Week with the annual tour of the fire station this week.Several firefighters helped with the event. Tours were given of the different aspects of firefighting. The firemen gave some safety lessons, telling the children why not to return inside a burning house to save a pet, how to stay below the smoke in a fire, and offering a demonstration of smoke in a room.

Baldwin recognized for 25 years of service to the Vinton Kiwanis

Kellie Roberts, President of the Kiwanis Club of Vinton and Nancy Baldwin Kiwanis member Nancy Baldwin was honored at Tuesday's meeting for her 25 years of service to the Community.Baldwin joined the Vinton Daybreaker Kiwanis Club in 1997 and served as their President from 2002-2003.  She then joined the Noon Kiwanis Club of Vinton and served as President for the 2013-14 term.  Kellie Roberts, the current President of the Kiwanis Club of Vinton presented Nancy Baldwin with a plaque in recognition of her 25 years of service to the community.

Iowa ranked one of the worst states for sex trafficking in Iowa

At a presentation for the local Kiwanis noon luncheon, Nick Mullnix spoke on behalf of the organization that is starting up called, Iowa House of Refuge. The House of Refuge, the nonprofit is developing from an idea created by an organization in Idaho that works to rescue victims of human trafficking or sex trafficking. When they looked at the numbers, Iowa is worse than Idaho in the industry.

Vinton needs your help TODAY to put our water tower on the map!

Over the course of several weeks Vinton's east water tower has received a good cleaning both inside and our and a fresh coat of paint. Gone is the old sight with just the name "Vinton" on the tower. Now the tower has been entered into a contest for the best "tank." Here's what their website says, "Since 2006, Tnemec has celebrated the innovative and creative uses of our coatings on water tanks with an annual Tank of the Year contest.

Vinton Fire Department stops at TLC Daycare

Every year when the Vinton Fire Department visits the schools during Fire Prevention Week, I appreciate them even more. I know when I was a  kid, the only education we had was a fire truck ride in kindergarten.As I watched VFD volunteers, Michael Elwick and Ross Hanson present fire safety to the children in preschool I knew two things. They have to be very careful not to scare the children, but they also want very much to educated them on what to do if they are in a house fire.
